Hi guys,

I have a Emerald 39 Sump that I have setup on 210 for roughly 6 months (210 was setup at the same time) and would like some recommendations on some possibly better ways to set it up for maximum efficiency. I have tried several different things without anyone thing being much more effective in others (in varying aspects) that are listed below, along with a photo.

So I have tried running varying sizes of filter socks from 100 microns up to 225 microns and seem to run into issues with each. I know that the smaller ones are of course going to clog up quicker and that the larger ones allow more through. With the sump though I have the option of 3 filter socks or a filter pad that would sit above where the filter socks would go. The issue I am having though is the smaller microns are having to be cleaned every 2-3 days, usually 2, which is time consuming even with multiple socks to be able to switch in and out. The larger ones though allows so much through that the filter media at the other end before the return compartment clogs up quickly and needs to be cleaned every 2-3 days.

The opposite side I have tried 100 micron finishing pads followed by 50 micron finishing pad on the next platform below. I have also tried a filter pad on the upper platform with the 100 micron on the lower platform. I have tried both of these setups with the filter sock setups listed above. On the smaller microns this side needs cleaning roughly every 4 days and the larger microns is about every 2 days. The other big issue here is the more clogged the less water in the return compartment.

Any recommendations on ways to filter the water for the best water quality with roughly weekly maintenance? Currently I am getting water changes down around every two weeks. This is because we also have a 210 FW planted aquarium that gets dealt with on the opposite weekend.

In the refrugium compartment I have approximately a 2" sand bed, a few smaller pieces on live rock rock, and Chaetomorpha macro algae. Any recommendations for the refugium? What to change, add, to remove?

Thanks in advance guys,
Dalton

Looks like you are missing the acrylic piece that goes over filter socks. That is supposed to help quiet down the sump.
200 micron socks is what I use and change out weekly.

I went with bio pure marine balls I fuge section as lighting that generates coraline and other crap that goes with light usage.
