Trigger Experts

Ok. Thanks for all your help. Is running the risk of your whole tank being eaten in one random day worth it or is it that just the horror stories... I love niger triggers and if just having him in my tank made it better I will do that vs 2 triggers. Is it worth it to have him in there at the risk of my whole tank?

Ps I am assuming that a tang or wrasse won't randomly eat my whole tank one day is this the case

A Niger Trigger is a great fish and has a low chance of turning on you. I find with the more 'aggressive/reef-risky' fish if you keep them well fed they are fine.

It is really going to be a little bit hit or miss, not every fish has the same personality, that being said, I have heard of a ton of people having great times with the majority of triggers, I had a niger for awhile, absolutely amazing fish, with most triggers, the worst that will happen, is you are going to need to replace some snails once in awhile. There are a select few that are different, like the undulated and clowns, so as long as you stay away from those, you should be good to go.

+1 smaller groupers. Smaller sweet lips, eels, Lionfish, larger angels depending on the species, the more aggressive tangs and aggressive wrasses could all be doable.

That's a great video saw donkey. Has he eaten any of your fish?

And Tyler or anyone. How would a flame angel/ Coral beauty / black Knox angel do?

Is a kole tang too small?

No, he is actually fine with fish. He only attacks me and even draws blood sometimes. It makes working in the tank a little stressful but keeps it exciting. He relentlessly a Attacks my algae scraper. Teeth pic attached.

I've had him for 6-7 years and have added fish in that time. He is a little aggressive for the first day or two, but quickly stops caring about new additions. I recently added two smallish clowns and be never even acknowledged their existence. Same with my Picasso. I've also added anthias that he slightly chased for a few days, but stopped caring. I also added a small tusk that he occasionally chased, but that was mostly because the tusk was aggressive at stealing his food. After about a year the tusk jumped out of the tank and died.

As far as aggression goes, I wouldn't worry about it unless your adding really delicate fish like butterflies. The biggest problem with my triggers is that they pick up gravel with their mouths and spit it on my sps. Triggers are my favorite fish and they are super entertaining. Go for it.

as long as you're only keeping those 2 specie of trigger you're good. I was at Coral Corral in Tampa last week and they have a 900 gal. with at least 8 different sp. of trigger. With that kind of space, (12') they can get away with it. They have an 8" clown trigger (One of my all time favorite fish) that swims non stop throughout the tank . The 2 species you mentioned won't get as big and are good tank mates with many other fish. Im no trigger expert though, just my .02

Hmmm, maybe not the dwarf angels. I personally wouldn't do that, but most can hold they're own and are quite fast, so it may be ok :) same as the kole tang, he's a quick little fella too who can stand up against an aggressor. I personally would say yes to the tang, but would like to hear other opinions about the angels.

I kept a clown trigger for 2 years with an emperor, flame, and lemon peel angle in a 120. All were tank mates, except the lemon peel, in a 55 gal before the 120. Never any problems. All were very small when acquired which helps a lot. Just like us, kids play better together than adolescents do. If you can introduce the trigger last that helps also.
