Hello. I am up and running on a new 90gl with a used Trigger Sump that I bought. As you can see in the picture, the overflow from the tank goes in the sump and there is about a 4-5 inch orange stand pipe that goes down into the filter sock (Currently removed in picture). My question is this: Does that orange standpipe need to be there or should the water gravity fall into the filter sock out of the black fitting? As currently constructed, it makes quite a bit of gurgling. I wasn't sure what the correct install should be as I bought this setup used.

Also, I will be installing a RedSea Skimmer in that same compartment this weekend, if that makes a difference..more of an fyi.

Definitely need the pipe to extend below the water line into the sock, maybe not as deep, 2" or so would be plenty. Otherwise you're going to be dealing with a lot of salt creep.

The pipe below the water-line also greatly reduces the noise. Those with a second, emergency drain will usually have it above the water: when it gets used, due to a clogged primary drain, then the noise-level helps notify the aquarist that something is amiss.
