Triton ICP results, any insight?

Unwanted heavy metals

Al - probably caused by marine pure Of concern - probably not
La - You do not use GFO - but you have use something else in order to depress the phosphate - and this something content lanthanum chloride. Of concern - probably yes

Macro-Elements

All indicate low salinity of concern - yes/no but good to adjust

Li-Group

Li - probably your salt - of concern - I do not know

I-Group

I - a little to low in my taste but in this case - the taste is like the butt - divided

The rest - IMO - rather OK

Salinity looks low, and raising it will boost potassium and magnesium which would be a benefit, and calcium, which is not hurt by rising.

Potassium might need a boost beyond that.

In regards to La, I had my BRS pukani in a bath of RO/DI water and dosed lanthanum chloride to help remove the phosphates pukani is somewhat known for leaching. This was over a year ago though and I’ve done countless of water changes prior to switching to triton. Could the rock be leaching that still a year later?

I’ll adjust for salinity. Thanks again!

Thanks Randy! I’ll work on getting salinity back up. I thought I was reading at 1.024 but I’ll recalibrate everything when I get back home and raise it to 1.026

Interesting - and you have not use any liquid super-duper anti-phosphate agents since then? The only source for La as I know is then it is used for phosphorus limitation.

The only thing I used was PhosGuard for 3 days or so after my sump went down for 2 weeks in hopes of removing excess phosphate once the return pump came back online. Could this have caused it?
 
No, phosguard might boost aluminum, but not lanthanum. :)

Then I give up! :)

I feed a variety of food (hikari frozen and pe frozen) and seaweed every other day for the tangs. Occasionally they get black worms as a treat. I’d hope none of that stuff would leach Lathanum.

As far as salt, I use Red Sea blue bucket

So what should I be looking for? Could I expect growth stunt or deaths?

Probably you do need not to look for anything - I´m think its no danger - I´m calling in sallstrom - he works at a public aquarium and use Lanthanum chloride now and then.

Yes we use LaCl(powder we mix with osmos water). But have only seen La once in our ICP-tests(many, for 3 tanks where we use LaCl). And it was only a small amount.
So I have always thought that it reacted fast and didn't stay for long in the water.

Maybe it could be from the rocks you treated? Could it be released back from solid form if pH drops?

If La is dangerous or not I can't say for sure. But I know of public aquariums who stopped using it after some fish died. I think they claimed the La effected the gills in some ways. We haven't seen any problems at work, but we are careful and only dose small amounts at the time.

I used SeaKlear phosphate remover. Here’s a link to the MSDS

I soaked all rock in RODI water and dosed SeaKlear to control the rising phosphates in the RODI water. After a few weeks, I rinsed in tap water then soaked in in plain RODI water for a few days.

Set the tank up a few days after it dried. This was about a year ago. I can’t think of any other source of LaCl

That is likely the source and I wouldn’t worry about it. [emoji3]
