I just received my first ICP results and I need some help with the analysis. Triton does give their recommendations, but I wanted to hear opinions from the R2R folks.

Quick background: 75G mixed reef.
LPS not doing too well and all SPS have died
Most softies thriving
Weekly water changes
9 fish (small to medium)
Reef Octopus skimmer
ATO
Refugium w/ cheato
Was dosing Neophos to get my phosphates up, now there at .06 and holding steady
Nitrates were low, but now holding steady at 3-4ppm

Triton says my Tin is high, which may be a suspect due to a clip magnet that was rusting
Triton says my phosphates/phosphorus is high, but my Hanna checker consistently shows .03-.06.
How do I convert ug/l and mg/l to ppm??
Anything I should address immediately?

Suggestions?

Thanks!!!

How do I convert ug/l and mg/l to ppm?
1 ppm = 1 mg/l (at least so close to this that we can use in our hobby) 1 mg/l = 1000 ug/l

Sincerely Lasse

The ICP method analyzes the P content in your water - not the PO4. PO4 is mathematical calculated from the P result. The method requires that all P in the water is in the form of PO4. Often it is - but particles and surface film can alter the results. I always open my sample vessel 10 cm below the surface to avoid surface film in my sample. Your result says 0.129 ppm. A little high IMO but no panic. Just stop dosing and se what's happen. Tin is high but I do not know how toxic this metal is

Sincerely Lasse

If you are worried that your Hanna checker may be off slightly, have a friend or a LFS test it and double check your result. I agree with @Lasse though.. Likely something was in the sample that raised total P.

From what you explained, bottoming out your phosphate in a new tank can be a killer on SPS and some more sensitive LPS. How old is the tank?

Tank is 9 months old and just starting to stabilize. My main concern is the Tin. Other than one suspect (magnet w a tiny bit of rust) I don’t know where the source may be coming from. WC’s, metasorb and some additional ICP tests should help. Any other advice? Thanks!

Yup, if you are worried about the tin, I'd throw the metasorb pad in. Other than that I would just be religious around testing and maintaining PO4 and Alkalinity.

I've been having Tin issues as well but I found an absurd amount of small pieces of metal in the tank. Removed what I could. Did water changes but ultimately had to tear out all the rock and sand.

Anyway, many people recommended Triton Detox wich may work for you since the amount you found is relatively small.

To be sure. Run a magnet through the sand to see if a screw may have dropped in. Clean and check all your pumps and powerheads. Also double check any brackets in the stand or near the sump and replace with plastic if they aren't already plastic. (Check screws as well)
