Triton method no sand it DT?

Hello, I am currently in the early stages of setting up a 125 gallon reef tank. Because my goal is to be SPS dominant I’m going to put a lot of flow into the tank which means I’d like no sand in the DT. I’m wondering if I can implement the triton method with a bare bottom tank? Would it be better to add something like marine pure blocks in the return/Fuge compartment to help add filtration? Thank you in advance.

Actually was just watching a brs video about the triton method and bb. They used those marinepure blocks. Seemed to work well for them. I think that’s what I will be using once I set up my bb sps tank.

I am running Triton, Bare Bottom using Brightwell blocks with an inch of sand in the Fuge space. Went great the first 18 months. Lost most my SPS after changing too many things at once while neglecting testing too long but otherwise its totally doable.

Triton, Bare Bottom, MarinePure, exactly how I've run my latest tank for three years now. You may get high aluminum readings at first like I did (supposedly from the MarinePure) but after running some Metasorb I have not had elevated aluminum since.

That’s interesting about the aluminum. How did you know about it, the CIP tests?

+1 on BB tank with marine blocks. sand is overrated (unless you really want to have wrasses)

For those of you that are doing the bb, BRS said that it’s much harder in the first year. What kinds of issues did you experience? And those who are doing the Triton, did you start off from the initial build using this method or did you convert?

I actually converted my tank already cycled from sand to BB, so maybe some of the issues doesn't apply here. But from my experience, once I converted to BB I noticed the tank was significantly lagging on flow (I thought I had enough). You wouldn't notice this when you have sand as detritus sinks into the sand. But with BB if you don't have enough flow the detritus will just build up in a corner and really cause problem by trapping dirt, bacteria, and algae. So if you are going BB, my suggestion is to get a controllable wavemaker, slowly ramp up the flow until you don't see any detritus build up anywhere anymore.

From the initial start, no problems, just went slow.
