Can the triton method work without the use of algae. Let’s say the tank with a skimmer is already a sufficient for nutrient export would I still be able to use all their products without issues?

I any method says step xxxx Use YYY - I would not skip YYY. The answer - the nutrients in the 'Triton method' - are the same chemicals used in other 'methods'. That said - if you want to follow the triton method - its probably most successful if you follow the entire method?

I understand that but is the algae playing any other role other than nutrient export ?

I’ve used Triton on a few tanks.

Do some reading up on their website, there are some download instructions which give much more detail and answer your question, and more.

In short though, there are two different products:

“Core 7 Triton Method” and “Core 7 Other Method”.

The difference being is that Triton Method is specifically if you’re running the full method, with algae bed. It has an increased amount of certain elements that encourage algae growth, iron being one of them, but there are a few.

“Other Method” doesn’t have the increased levels needed for algae beds, and will be fine to use with any method or filtration.

Thank you! I’ll look into the other core 7 method

No matter what "method" that you want to use, do not skip steps. The method is a method for a reason. Either adopt 100% of it, or find something else.

Some algae can release DOC for the corals to use as fuel/energy. If they need specific types of algae, then stick with it. Algae also uses co2 and can raise pH in some instances. They should explain why they need each part and what good that it does.

BTW - not sure that any method is necessary. Just regular nature-based things work very well.

I’m just exploring things. I just got back in the hobby and I had the best success just running a skimmer and filter socks for nutrient export but wanted to experiment with the triton stuff. I’m going to give it a try and see.
