Tropic Eden sand sizes and how much to get

Did you buy a canopy or not on for any of your SCA tanks @Antics[/USER] ? I am going to be floating my canopy about 6 inches from the tank to hide my Hydra 52 HD, Hydra 26 HD & another Hydra 26 hd.

I used 80/20 to make a light rail for my tank since its a rimless peninsula. I did plan to cover it with a floating canopy but its on the back burner right now. :)

I just posted my picture for reference. I didn't want to suggest that it would not work out for you. You may need that much sand, as my rock structures are on the bottom of the tank. With your minimal scape you would need more than I did. Please note I said mine was 1 inch to 1.5 inches around(not under rock structures).

You have an awesome tank being put together. Good luck. I can't wait to see your progress.

Right on~ well I have been designing this new SCA 150 for the last 1year and a few months now and it's almost ready to go up (FINALLY) I just have to wait until the end of the month to place my order with Synergy for there SS-44 sump and the matching 10 gallon ATO storage container in Black and Red Mercury and I can start hard plumbing the drains and the returns which I have already dry fitted everything! See I got my tank from Steve over @ SCA pre drilled for a Synergy plus it's the Rimless like yours.

I wasn't 100 percent sure so I went to double check my invoice. Yes it was 2 bags. My goal was a very shallow sand bed. I hope the info helps.

Hi,
Great looking tank, that's going to look super cool.
On the sand, i use a live sand formula to figure the pounds. It's L x W x Thickness inches X .0579. So your 60x24x1x.0579 = 83 pounds per INCH. So live sand is usually more towards sugar size, so you can go a little less depending on how coarse. So example Reef Flakes Grand size would fill up more volume then Snow size. I think your 7 x 30lb you already bought is going to get you really close to what you want. So you'll get 2" for sure and close to your 3" level. Dont mean to call anyone out but just wanted to show that it would be impossible to fill a 150 w/ a 2'' sand bed with 2 30pound bags. Now you know I will be using 7 bags and might even need 1 or 2 more..

Thank You,
Jason Frey @premiumaquatics

I'm sure the orange is payment/shipping info.

7-8 bags will probably be needed since you're going with a minimalist rock work. 3 was more than enough for me, but as I said I used reef flakes and my Pukani is taking up a considerably amount of surface area where sand would normally be.

I am using Vidawave large corner piece and I had a #Aquarocks build me two piece one was a Custom Show pcs that was 30'' in lenght and the other one is another piece he made me. My new system I will be do a more SPS Dominate type tank! Less rock and more coral.

@Antics - Care to share how you have your lighting floating on that rail above your display tank? I think i have decided to go with the D-D Slimeline brackets instead of the AI HMS single arm Brackets. I currently own a pair and they are build like junk in my honest opinion.
I don't understand why the States does not carry the D-D line. After doing a lot of research and i finally found a supplier in Canada that sells D-D Slimline brackets. They are build like a tank and look a million times better compared to the HMS brackets.
I will have two Hydra 26's HD;s on each end of the tank installed w/ 2 60cm D-D Slimeline brackets and have my Hydra HD 52 mounted in the middle with also a Slimeline bracket (60cm). Then I am going to be floating my canopy about 6'' above my Display.
Just getting ready to place my order with Synergy for one of there SS-44'' Sumps, then I can start hard plumbing my 1'' returns and my 1.5'' drains. Ones I get my sump I will be revising my Build thread.

My tank is a 48x24” 100g. Im going to mix 20# of reef flakes and 30# of meso to try and get about an 1” total. I have 40# extra of some meso sized flakes (some other brand) I’ll mix in if needed but I think 50# should be enough.

Here is the sand formula to figure the pounds. It's L x W x Thickness inches X .0579. So my 150 would be - 60x24x1x.0579 = 83 pounds per INCH but you should be ok..

What does 0.579 represent? pounds per cubic inch?

@Redleg - It's a formula that @premiumaquatics gave me so I know how many bags I will need for my 60''x24'x24'' display.
My 120 that I am currently breaking down I had around 75lbs of live sand in there in order to get a nice and thick sand bed.

I have reef flake and it is somewhat coarse. My yellow wrasse doesn't seem to mind and buries in no problem. I'm doing SPS and with (2) MP40's on a 48" tank at full power I can still make the sand move.

If you aren't targeting high flow, the mini or mesoflake MIGHT be fine.Definitely still rinse. It's pretty clean, but still very dusty.

Here's a past debate:

Question: Did you rinse in tap water, or saltwater?

Question: Did you rinse in tap water, or saltwater?

@BrianReefer - I 'm waiting on my Synergy CL-44 sump that I ordered so the system is not up and running quite yet!
Check out and head over to my new build thread that i started for the new build since I have changed a lot of things! See below in my signature . As far as your question - I rinse the sand very well with tap water and then give a final rinse with RO before adding to my system ya never want to rinse pretty much anything with saltwater!

Hi Guys, I am getting ready to set up my SCA 150 and have decided to go with Tropic Eden Mesoflakes 30lb (aragonite crumbs, 2.7mm). The spec on my 150 gallon are the following 60''X24X24''. So far I have picked up so far 7 - 30 lb bags of it from @premiumaquatics!
I am thinking I am going to at least need 4 more bags - 11 total, in order to lay a nice 2-3'' layer of sand across it evenly! What are your thoughts?

Love the idea of putting the grate beneath the aquascape. I had an issue recently where the sleeper goby dug out the sand under my rock and caused an avalanche. Evil Chernobyl. maybe I need to use a courser sand in the new build to keep him from sandbombing everything??? Great thread. I, too, have been using Fiji pink...
