Anyone that uses this salt is it known to be higher than the stated cal and mag specs? Using Salifert test kits for the first time, not sure if the salt is higher in these specs than it should be or the tests are reading high, both were near the top of the chart, cal was 490 should be 440 and mag was around 1450 should be 1350.

Salinity is 1.025

I use this salt, and no, I haven't had those results. Double-check your salinity calibration. Out-of-calibration salinity probes/refractometers will give you elevated levels.

Salinity is 1.02

I'll get weird numbers if I do not mix it up. BRS did a experiment on salt settling during shipping. This salt showed to have settling issues. A bigger issue I have is the salt is out of stock so frequently.

Never used the salifert test kits but I would imagine that they could be off slightly. How long did you wait after mixing the salt to testing it. Because I'm sure the mix needs time to balance out. I use the red sea test kits and Hanna checkers. They seem to be ok. I getba little variation but nothing out of wack.

I tested the tank and fresh mix, both were high.

Someone might be able to correct me or educate me because I could be wrong. If the salinity is actually elevated a bit a could play a role and be related to the elevated numbers of the magnesium and calcium. Are you using a refractometer to test the salinity? If so arebyou sure its calibrated correctly?

All I use is Tropic Marin Pro and never an issue. Question is what alk did you get at 1.025? That will also give an idea of your refractometer is off. I test all new salt batches at 1.026 I get consistent 7.3 to 7.4 alk

Salinity is tested with a Misco and alk with Hanna to match the tank once mixed then if I need to increase it a bit

Same.

Really? Looks pretty spot on to me

yes correct it can, if anything it’s slightly low, I use a refractometer, checked with home made calibration fluid.

alk was 7kh.

Probably a testing error, I’m not really questioning the salt, I think it’s either me or my salinity , salinity seems fine though, I do have a hydrometer coming so I’ll double check with that, just really trying to get all the possibilities so I know where to check.

Seems like testing error if salinity is 1.025 and alk at 7

I had no issues with numbers

I use tropic marin bio actif. same as reef pro but has an added element for removing waste... they warn that, because of the additive, digital salinity measurements misread low- on the outside chance you’re using bio-activ and a digital reader, your salinity could actually be higher than 1.025 and that could explain your other elevated levels.

I use Tropic Marin Pro and Salifert for both Mag and Cal. Measurements on Dec 30 were 1335Mag and 460 Cal Salinity also 1.025 I don't dose and purchase a Hanna Cal since I was running low on the Salifert but haven't use it yet.

hopefully I’ll be able to pin what I’m doing wrong tomorrow when the new hydrometer comes.

Thanks all, I was not sure if my reading were within reasonable margins, by the replies I have some more checking to do.
