My main thought is that it's not a very good coral food, at least not for most zooxanthellates.

I think it is sodium alginate.

I read a couple of threads on feeding of non-photosynthetic corals and sponges.

Your talking about the "extract of algae" I suppose? To be listed before algae means there's more of it then algae. It's not a good coral food what so ever other then being a carbon source. Reef Nutrition uses it to keep the feed in suspension. With Rn there is a very minuscule amount as the stuff is rather potent in terms of doing what it needs to do (keep stuff in suspension).

Yes the "extract of algae" specifically. I have never used it myself but have been following other threads as I was thinking about a cryptic zone and a true mixed reef with non-photosynthetic corals. Someone mentioned that they were using it. I like to follow the alternative threads as much as possible just to see whats out there. My other thought was if someone was going to use this then I'm not sure of the cost of the Tropic Marin stuff but you can buy sodium alginate online in bulk.
