I got a discosoma mushroom back from the dead a few months ago. Long story short, I thought it withered and died, but turns out it got unhappy, shrank, and went for a walk.
Found it later, getting stuck in the wavemaker. It was tiny... about 4-5 mm diameter.

Fast forward a few months later, it huge now. And bright orange! But lately, instead of opening completely, it seems to form a trumpet shape, exposing only a bit of its gorgeous orange coloration.

Any idea why its doing this? At first I thought not enough lighting, but it was fine for a few months. Plus I have other SPS and hammers and zoas, and they all seem to be doing well.
Lights are an illumagic blaze x mini, supplemented with a vitamini strip. Might even be a bit overkill for a 2 foot tank.

Params are nitrate 3, phos 0.05, alk 7.6, cal 428, mag 1380, ph 8.1, temp between 25-26c.

Heres a quick snap...

Anyone?

Perhaps because it’s wedged between rocks and probably looking up for light.

Yes, my guess too is that because of its size now, compared to when it was smaller, the shape that it takes when stretching for light looks more trumpet like than what you were used to seeing.

Looks like its just trying to readjust to the spot its in. They tend to open up in strange ways until they are happy with the flow and lighting.

Btw while the funnel shape signals lack of light, the reason it does this is likely to allow food to channel to the mouth easier. Too little light so need more food :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

It used to be open just fine out onto the ledge in front of it.

And I'm hesitant to up the lights output any further for fears of burning some of the other corals higher up...

Can uou move it
A bit afraid to, cos when i found it in my tank a few months ago in a small cave, i moved it up and had a really tough time getting it to anchor down. (In the process getting sucked into a wave maker)
