So I'm pretty new to sps and was wondering if my trumpet was doing well, it currently has algae growing all over it.

Trumpet coral also known as candy cane are large polyp stony coral or LPS coral. During the day the polyps should expand enough to completely cover the skeleton. Once algae takes over the polyps get irritated and will open less and less. If they don't open enough they won't get the necessary light for photosynthesis nor will they be able to capture food from the water column. This will result in rapid decline. Sometimes supplemental feeding at night will reverse this if your tank parameters are at the right levels.

So do you think manually cleaning the algae off would work?

Shake the coral slightly so that the heads fully retract. Use a soft toothbrush to remove as much of the algae as possible, being careful to avoid touching the coral flesh with the toothbrush bristles.

Ok thanks for the help!
