Like I said earlier, I didn't know about pests. I didn't QT or dip any of my corals, I just plopped them in the tank after a temp/salinity acclimation. Then one day a friend of mine is looking at me tank and
he says, "You have red bugs." I had no idea what he was talking about. So I did a little research and saw that they were easy enough to treat in the tank with Interceptor. I followed the directions and thought everything was good. Looking back I believe that I killed off a lot of the pod population which caused a bacteria crash. One day I was looking at the tank and observed this-
Ok, I had lost corals before. This was a little more painful because it was a full grown out colony, but I wasn't going to panic. Within a week I had a full tank crash and lost all my SPS. I was able to save many of the LPS.
I felt like someone kicked me in the stomach. I love this hobby so I took this opportunity to rebuild utilizing all that I had learned so far. I would be more discriminating in the corals I collected
and rebuild better and stronger. First step was to move everything to the basement and purchase some new equipment for the rebuild.
I took off the Hamilton fixture and replaced it with LumenBrights, 2x250 MH DE. I took out my Mag 9.5 and replaced it with an Eheim. I picked up some used equipment from a club member
who was getting out of the hobby. I picked up a Deltec skimmer and calcium reactor. The combination of the LumenBrights and the calcium reactor helped growth tremendously.
I started the rebuild by turning my biggest rock horizontal rather than vertical. I wanted more surface area to mount corals. I also decided to go bare bottom this time around.
I put back the survivors and luckily our club was holding an auction. I was able to pick up some quality pieces quickly. I didn't add a fish to this tank for five months and when I did
I only added four fish.
