hello, I have a 250 gal with a center overflow. I am trying to drill a 1.5 inch circle through the side of my overflow. I am creating a easy water change system. My overflow seems to have glass or acrylic covered with plastic. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this normal for a larger tank? If it’s glass does anyone know if it’s tempered? I emailed the guy I got the tank from for a name of the company that made it. Thanks for the help!!

That looks like it's glass wrapped in vinyl to me. Only the manufacturer could tell you if it's tempered.

There are a few manufactures that do this still. Glasscages comes to mind; maybe coast-to-coast also. I had an old, early reef ready tank that had an acrylic shell over a glass overflow. I think it probably is not tempered, but only the make can say for sure. Ideally you'd remove the shell because the bits to use on plastic and glass are different.

There’s one sure fire way to find out if it’s tempered. You might not like the results, though.
