Trying to figure out why I'm losing SPS

Following... sort of in the same boat but my dkh is around 10.

So in this case.. couldn’t you supplement for NO3 and PO4? Maybe your sps aren’t getting enough organics.
It's possible. If they didn't have great color I would understand In this case they are totally dying off! Driving me crazy. Montis do fine and so do zoas and LPS. Just not those sticks that I used to hate and now love!

I would be curious to see how things do if you could get your NO3 up to about 5ppm by either taking your chaeto reactor offline or increasing feeding. Are you using Carbon or GFO?

Have you checked closely to make sure you do not have acropora eating flatworms or red bugs? it could be some type of pest if it is only effecting acros.

I'm going to pull the reactor off line and see if that helps at all? It's worth a shot.

I've tried looking for redbugs or flat worms and have never seen any.

How much do you dose? I was reading that you shouldn’t exceed 2 ml per 26 gallons and if I read it correctly you have Red Sea 170 which is 34 gallon? Are you exceeding that? Also, I don’t know the par rating coming from your lights. But I have a 90 gallon and run SB reef lights and I only run my blue lights at 33% for 8 hours and my whites at 12% for 4 hours. Your lights might be too bright. But if it’s the tips that are just turning white and then the sps going bad I wouldn’t say it’s the lights. Usually white tips mean growth of the sps. Are you using up that many trace elements that you need to dose? Could you just stop dosing and rely on the bi-weekly water change to replenish the trace elements? How many corals do you have in there to use up the trace elements?

I just sent water out on Friday to test. My alk comes from daily dosing through Triton additives
Sometimes things go easy .... sometimes you have to dig deeper to find the root cause ;)

I agree that an ICP analysis s the next logical step.
It will proof right or wrong wether you have an issue with a certain "killer parameter" like heavy metals poisoning your water.

Here is some more food for thougts in finding the root cause

A) Light and Flow !
SPS can be Diva's in this respects.
- UV Light is required for photosynthesis. It is much better if this is "coming from all around" to the SPS and with the "correct intensity AND UV specturm" (strong but not too strong, spectrum ok). All the Super-SPS stuffed tanks i have seen over several years in Germany used T5-lightnings. Some of them combined with LED or HQIs, but always full T5 coverage over the whole length/depth of the tank. A look on this visualization explains why this is the case.

.... i know chaning of lightning is costly... but maybe it is the way you have to go. Do you have an option to lend/try out a T5 Panel ??

Also flow especially around the SPS branches Polyps is important. Corals polyps can fetch food only if it circulates around them.

B) "Too many" of some traces ?
I did not use Triton method on my own. For me it is a bit suspect and i perceive it as kind of "over-engineering". The risk is to overdose certain traces, eg Potassium which can be counter productive/harmfull if level are too high.
Dosing traces "together" with the dosing you do anyhow for Ca and Alk, with the same matched consumption rate of your tank is preferred from my side

c) Corals suffering ?
There is a situation between healthy/colorful and RTN for SPS.
In case your nutrients are not "close to" but really "0" a check with feeding with amino acids can be worth a try

i really hope that you manage to find out and elimnate the cuase especially as you seem to do a lot of things right obviously already and show the required energy level you need to have as a really successful reefer

I have had issues keeping levels stable with the smaller water volume. I went to dosing to stabilize. The amount of dosing chnages with this specific Triton because it is diluted. I think it's 20ml they recommend you start at. I'm considering trying the diffuser panels to see if that helps. I also have a tank upgrade coming in the next 4 weeks!

Thanks so much for the response Martin! I spend a lot of time on this tank! Zoas, lps and clams do great Zoas almost to good! I've considered switching to just BRS three part to dose and see if that helps. For flow I'm using to MP10 wqd pumps on a few different flow patterns. It's driving me crazy!

You’re welcome.

I’d like you to consider the light suggestion especially.
In my own tank I had a 2xHQI light plus minimalistic T5 only. SPS did ok but never really good.

Than I changed to lots of T5’s and SPS growth significantly improved. No changes to other parameters just the source of light.

Following along on this thread. This is why i left SPS and went all softies, was actually contemplating going back to SPS again for another go at it, just convinced me to be bapha with my softy leather tank. LOL

I did have the T5 led combo light about a year ago. I will be buying the fixture that is an addition to the led lighting when I switch tanks here in a few weeks.

Update...

Had chaeto reactor dark for three days before I took it offline yesterday. One note on this. A few months ago one of my kids unpluged the pump going to the reactor and I lost most of my chaeto. Smell was unreal! I kept a few clumps that seemed ok. When I empties the reactor yesterday....it was slime. Not sure if this was a cause in my issues? Still waiting on water test results but I'm hoping this gives me some information

Here are my water results. I don't think anything is to crazy? Other than turning down lights I'm open to suggestions. Chaeto rector is offline as well
