Trying to get into the reef tank world.

Hello to everybody. I'm start planning to get into this amazing hobby. I was in fresh water world, cichlids to be more precise and I did well for 3 years but I had to move the city. Now I'm trying to go back but this time with salt water, I know this is a different universe that's why I'm doing my research and trying to collect all the info, tips and suggestions. One the biggest question that I have is how ig has to be my sump for a 260 gallons tank?. The most exciting part of this hobby is to do the things myself as possible, like fish tank, base, plumbing and sump. So if anybody has the time to reach me out with some tips, I would be very grateful. Thanks to everyone in advance. [emoji1]

Welcome!

Essentially a sump only needs to be large enough to hold the equipment you want to place in it. When you consider return pump size, skimmer, reactors, socks/mechanical media, refugium?, etc. that helps determine overall size. The positive is the overall size under a 260 is great, which leaves plenty of room for say a 55g (may only be filled hallway) or larger. You can DIY a sump by creating your own baffles or pony up the bucks for a designed acrylic sump which range from simple to very elaborate.

On the sump, the bigger the better really as it gives you more space for equipment and also total system water volume

I like my sump large enough so when I shut off the return pump it can handle the drain down from the DT.

the largest sump you can fit as you will find ways to use the space but good advise so far

In this case sump = bigger is better, doubble if you are in Texas where everything is big.
I made the jump. Its not a big deal. If you did cichlids you know about aggression and waste issues.
Will you do coral or fish or both? Lagoon or reef?

Welcome! I would get the largest sump that can fit in my cabinet but leave enough space for an ATO automatic top off water reservoir and dry equipment such as dosing pumps, powersupplies.
