Trying to remote connect

I have been trying to figure out how to use vnc to be able to see my reef pi outside my network. I think i know the problem, but figured i would ask to be sure.

I enabled the vnc on my pi, and have the app installed on my phone. When i try to remote connect using vnc, it just hangs until it times out. If I'm connected to my home wifi, i can connect but only get a black screen. From everything I've read, it looks like i should've installed the full version of raspbian, instead of the light? If this is the problem, is there a work around or do i need to start over and install the full version?

No need for VNC, you can access the UI directly from a mobile web browser - just drop in the Pi's IP for access while on Wifi.

I'm good on that part. I'm trying to access it outside of my wifi. That's where my problem is.

You will need to setup port forwarding on your router.
