So,
I just happened on the product pages for FM Ultra Bak/ Bacto energy, which do list ingredients, and they are ethanol+acetates+tryptone and peptone+a row of b vitamins+ some additional aminos and salts.
So essentially nopox combined with a slightly tweaked LB media.
Anyone tried this product or in general LB media instead of/in addition to vodka and vinegar for carbon dosing? Would it promote different kinds of bacteria (better or worse?)? Some other benefits/drawbacks that are obvious to people smarter than me?

@taricha might have some ideas about this.

Adding nutrients to an aquarium will definitely promote bacteria growth. The nutrients that you list would be a banquet for microorganisms but when you make life easier for an ecosystem, diversity can go down not up. It seems that competition promotes diversity.

As far as adding nitrogen containing nutrients as part of a carbon dosing method, it defeats the purpose of carbon dosing which is nitrate level reduction. An aquarium supplied with proteins is a form of carbon dosing, but it also supplies nitrogen that will be taken up by bacteria rather than nitrate. Dosing protein would be a way to indirectly dose ammonia and other organic amines. It might also stimulate nuisance organism growth.

oooh. fascinating.
An advantage over a vodka or vinegar dose is that from what I've seen, those food sources you listed will be digested over a longer time period.
a disadvantage (depending on your point of view) is that you are adding a good bit of nitrogen too, as Dan mentioned.
You'll grow a lot of things! I'd be interested in your observations on the issue Dan raised about growing nuisances (cyano, dinos, etc)

Oooh yeah that's interesting. So for reducing nitrates it would be a bad idea. But im not actually carbon dose to reduce nitrates, at least not primarily, the goal is more to feed the filter feeders and maybe even the corals in the tank with bacteria. So i thought that maybe dosing the additional aminos etc. would provide a more varied diet, but if it would actually make the diversity go down that's bad i guess. Upon looking into it, the aforementioned product was supposed to be used for a zeolith method.

I haven't tried it yet, still looking into sourcing with sane amounts/prices, i have found some in fish bait supply shops labeled as tryptone, but ill have to inquire if its the genuine/unadulterated thing. Then i'll probably try it out.
