I am not sure what kind of tanks you have had in the past, I have had both acrylic and glass. My preference is glass by a country mile, but that is my opinion. I think you need to think about the pros and cons of each. The best advise I think I could provide is that if you do go acrylic make sure the panels are more than think enough. I have seen tanks craze (which is where the tank will bow in the middle and start to form small cracks from what looks like the center of the plastic)
I think that most manufacturers have this down now, but you never know.
Some other things to think about, if you have small kids they like to help clean the tank and use the magnetic scraper, which can end up in the sand and scratching the viewing panel..
