Tsunami waves arrive in Hawaii, no immediate reports of damage - Hawaii News - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

The first tsunami waves arrived on Oahu, but there were no initial reports of damage.

Gerard Fryer, a scientist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said waves may continue to come ashore for six or seven hours.

Gages recorded a 1.6 foot wave at about 10:30 p.m. Kahului Harbor also recorded a similar sized wave about 20 minutes later. Smaller waves were recorded in Waianae and Hanalei.

"The tsunami arrived about when we expected it should. It was a little smaller than we expected," Fryer said.

Officials said the initial wave is often not the biggest.

Fryer said the waves are about 12 minutes apart and about four waves had hit by 11:15 p.m.

The tsunami waves that hit Hawaii from last year's Japan earthquake were about 20 minutes apart, so they were much more powerful, Fryer said.

I wonder, underwater it probably would just feel like a weird passing current. It's land that pushes it up into a giant wave. Anyone know?

Best of luck to all of you, stay safe!
