I bought a used tank a couple days ago that came with a Tunze 3155 ATO. When I first set it up on my tank its been having trouble priming. I cleaned it with vinegar and tried turning it upside down and shaking it to get any air out, but it still had the same issue. I found if I opened the controller up and turned the pressure up I can get it to prime, but now I'm having the issue where it fills past the optical sensor and doesn't stop until it hits the float.

I have it set up in the return pump chamber of an RSM 130.

Has anyone had similar issues?

I ran it on an ole Red Sea 130 too.

At times I needed to soak the and clean the optical sensor.

But... I ran the unit on it's lowest setting, and never had any priming issues.

How much head pressure is it try to push? Most of these small ATO pumps can't cope with much at all.

Viktor is around on the other board and very helpful if you need him. Maybe he has a forum on here too, but I do not know.

Only about 3 feet. I'm tempted to buy a replacement pump, but if the sensor is malfunctioning as well I don't want to put more money into it

These days mine seems to be priming a little slower than it used to. I just make sure I never run my top off container dry, and avoid the issue altogether. If I wait too long usually a quick swirl gets it going.

I'd go ahead and buy the replacement pump. They're only 20-25 bucks, and if you ever need it you'll be glad to have it on hand.

Make sure the optical sensor is nice and clean, and that it's in a calm area of the sump with no bubbles hitting it. Sorry
It's not much help, that's about all I got.

I wonder if its losing power. when I turn the pressure all the way up it primes and will pump up to the tank, but if i dial it back as its pumping it tends to die right about when i get to the default setting

At 3' that could be the issue especially seeing as it was used. I'd try raising the ATO container to test it before I would get another pump, but that might be the answer too.
