Hey guys,

I have a peninsula style tank and currently have two Gyre 280's on the overflow size of the tank.

I am looking to purchase either (2) Tunze 6255 or (2) Stream 3's to increase flow in the lower sections of the tank.

Looking for anyone with first hand experience that has or has used either (or both) pumps for some insight as to which they would recommend.

Thanks!

I have had a Stream 3 for a little over a year in my 180 peninsula. I love it. With the new attachment it shoots well over to the far wall 6-feet away, and then bounces back. I'm not sure of the details, but I think it runs backwards for a short time every 24 hours. All I know is when I pull it apart for cleaning, there is nothing inside..ever! all this plus a 5 year warrantee! I have never used the 6255 so I can't compare but I highly recommend the Stream 3.

Thanks for the reply.

I was leaning towards the stream. How did you mount it? And have you hooked it up to a controller (Apex or GHL) or do you use the Tunze controller?

It comes with 2 magnetic mounts and I put it along the wall under the overflow. I control it with my Apex. You need the tunze cable but the ports are build into the Apex 2016 and Apex classic.

Yes I was planning to buy the cable to connect to my APEX. Do I need any of the expansion modules as well?

Thanks for all the help it’s much appreciated.

Which model of the Apex do you have? If it has the variable speed ports (usually labeled V1/V2) you do not need an expansion module.

I have the Apex 2016.

My tank is also on the main floor and all my filtration and the Apex itself is in the basement which is maybe a 15-20 foot run. I need to try and see how to connect the Tunze pumps all the way into the basement.

The Stream 3 comes with a very long cord between the pump and the controller. But the cable from the variable speed port on the Apex and the Tunze controller is quite short usually, so you will need to have the two boxes fairly close to each other. I'm sure you can get these specs online.

Thanks guys.

Made it a little easier to help make my decision.

Any ideas (or what cables from Apex that are needed) in order to have the Stream 3's and my Apex located in the basement be connected? It is a little hard on their website to find exactly what cables are required to increase the run.

Guys, @CC13 @ReefTeacher
When setting up the Stream 3, did you use the flow controller (half cap) to direct the flow?
I have a peninsula as well and want to mount the Stream 3 against the back (overflow) wall. It would make it necessary to use the half cap to push water in the longitudinal direction of the tank.

I am afraid this cap would reduce and lose lots of the pumps flow.

Good question and I agree with you, I think a lot of flow would be lost. I have a peninsula style tank and placing the stream 3 vertically on my overflow pane is my only option.

For this reason, I am considering and in the process of brainstorming how to get (or make) an acrylic adapter that would allow me to position and mount both my stream 3’s horizontally.

That is a good option and one I also considered, but it would look strange with this pump being so large.
I love the quality and power, though consider to get 2 Tunze 6105 instead.

I've been thinking about a Stream 3, however, I do have 2 6255's. They are beasts. So much power. I have an 800g tank, 10 ft long, and one of them at 100% moves stuff around on the other side of the aquarium.

They don't do much for gyre flow, but since you already have gyres, you don't need it. I very highly recommend the 6255's. Have had mine for years.

I know but the Stream 3 has a 5 year warranty which is unreal for a pump. I have seen some that mount the Stream 3 horizontally directly on the bottom pane. I have bare bottom so I might explore this option also... still trying to decide which would be best.

Maybe @rvitko has some suggestions or ideas on how best or options to get these beauties mounted horizontally?

Ya I considered the 6255's also and still might buy 2 of them for some additional flow. I like how they are controllable and if I ever upgrade to a larger system (which will happen lol) I can reuse these pumps there as well.
