So I decided to up grade my coralife lime wood stone skimmer ($39) to a Tunze 9001 ($110) yesterday. After reading so many good reviews about it and tired of changing out the lime wood stone every 3-4 weeks I pulled the trigger at my lfs. Once home and installed I saw the massive amounts of micro bubbles, not aware of what micro bubbles could do to fish I didn't think much of it and went to throw the garage. When I walked back in I noticed my flasher wrasse lost all its color, breathing very heavy and was laying on the sand bed like it was going to die. Then my cardnialfish did the same thing. I unplugged it and called me lfs. They then explained what micro bubbles can do to fish. They stated to put a piece of media foam in the bottom intake to reduce the bubbles, tried that same result. After taking the unit out about 4 or 5 times trying different things, the 2 clips that hold the magnet on the unit decided not to hold it anymore. The magnet now comes off every time you take the unit out of the water and falls to the bottom of the tank. I wanted to upgrade the skimmer to improve the water quality and help my fish and corals not hurt them. It is now unplugged and sitting in my tank. I read all the reviews about how it needs to break in blah blah blah. Well I'm not going to chance the life of my fish to let a skimmer "break in" maybe the people at Tunze should sell their products ready for use. I am beyond furious and it takes a lot to stress me out and tick me off. I already contacted Tunze to see what they have to say. I would not recommend this product at all.

Micro-bubbles don't harm fish. It's excess oxygen. Though I use the same unit and must admit I am not very happy with it. Still does not harm livestock. Yeah, mine still releases a lot of microbubbles after a year.

Then why would 2 of my fish act the way they would? Excess oxygen get stuck to their gills and it's like having the fish out of the water no? My 2 clowns were find but wrasse and cardnialfish looked like they were going to die.

Sorry I do not know what is wrong with your fish but air bubbles, microbubbles are not the problem I can assure you. I use to run my return pump on my 29 Biocube in a filter sock because my 9001 put so many microbubbles in the water. More annoying to look at to me, I hate microbubbles in my display. Eventually I gave in and ditched the sock now my display is full of bubbles nothing harmed.
