Tunze 9004 DC vs non-DC

Well, I took another route -- decided to go with the CAD light Elite II skimmer. Fits perfectly in the 2nd chamber of my JBJ45 -- and works like a charm. Couldn't be happier. Easy to clean and maintain -- which I've heard can be a challenge with the Tunze.

How is the noise level when compared to the original AC models?

Their is no noticeable difference in noise, they are both very quiet.

I've had one in a JBJ 45 for about 3 months, and it works fine; being able to dial it in with the controller is very nice.

My only objection is the noise; it's not bad, just a low pervasive hum -- and I'm sure it's probably quieter than the AC alternative.

But it's still far noisier than my return pump (Tunze 1073.050) a pair of MP10QDs and the fan on a Radion XR30w G4 Pro combined.

I've got the tank in my office, and happened to turn off the skimmer for the first time in months yesterday, and I was amazed at how much quieter the tank was. I love the skimmer, but now I'm wondering just how much worse off I'd be without it...

I'm facing the same problem. The evening if I turn off the skimmer (9004 AC) all the tank become dead silent (with return and movement pump)... and all because of the hummmmmm sound...

Some of you can tell me if the controllable one is quiter or if there's a way to silence this noise.. I got it in the sump

I use one on my QT tank and unless the water level is too low it is dead silent, assuming depth and assembly are correct, it would most likely be an out of balance/damaged impeller, that is the only moving part.

We don't make hang on skimmers as they inevitably overflow.

Unfortunately no, while we can accommodate a typical 1" support brace or trim, 3" thick is a tough one, I don't even think a hang on would accommodate that. It has been a couple decades since I used one but Sanders used to make a hang on skimmer that could accommodate fairly wide bracing and while it was less than perfect, the hanger had a catch and spout that directed any overflow back into the tank, it didn't catch it all, but it caught 90% of it. Thanks so much for this nod and reply, I had to mod my current HOB by extending pipes an inch, since this began its settled down quite a bit it’s just the pump noise,

The DC version just arrived. at 100% power the noise is the more or less same as AC version. But if you take it down at 50% or less the noise almost disappear

In general you will never use it at more than 50%, the DC pump at 50% has the power of the AC one with the air fully open.

I picked up a DC 9004 for my AIO. What a great skimmer. I've owned other Tunze skimmers and love them, but the DC pump makes the smaller skimmers much more adjustable. I'm a fan.

may i ask normally in a tank like mine (25g) how long should takes the 9004 skimmer to be full (to be cleaned)

There are a few variables, adjustment, waste load, certain additives, but in general I would expect 3-7 days and the cup ideally would get cleaned every 7 days minimum, the build up of waste on the riser tube inhibits further skimming even if the cup is not full.

Old thread here... how's everyone finding their Tunze 9004 controllable skimmer these days? Evaluating this for a Nuvo 40 in the first / overflow chamber... vs. running something smaller like an eShopps nano in the secondary chamber. Thx!

@rvitko is there a way to lower the water level but keep the air intake high on the DC?
If I up the air intake the skimmer will overflow.
Right now the grate is about 1/4” submerged.

Can I raise the entire body of the skimmer further ?

I like dry skim but also want maximum aeration.

All water enters through the top intake so this has to be submerged sufficient for it to take in water. In general given the small size of the skimmer, it will lean towards skimming wet, height is really the only way to dry the foam.
