We inherited a 90 gallon saltwater tank and have no idea what we are doing. There is an overwhelming amount of information out there.
Saying this, we purchased a new tunze protein skimmer and there are lots of micro bubbles coming out the side...what do we do and is this a defective unit...purchased brand new.

Thanks for your help.

The unit is likely just breaking in. I own two 9012 and both had a lot of bubbles out of the side (always the left side for some reason) when new and after I deep clean them every couple months. The bubbles won't harm anything, if it's a ridiculous amount of bubbles (say, the whole seam) then it's likely that the side isn't set all the way in and you should try to squeeze it and see if it clicks in more. If it's not a lot then it should stop in a week or two as it builds up a biofilm on it. I hope that made sense, keep us updated! (:

Thank you, we will try and close it if indeed this is the problem. Will keep a close eye on it. Should 3/4 off the intake grid be in the water with a quaternary out?

I like to keep mine at about halfway, but it will vary a little depending on how aggressively you're skimming, there's wiggle room. I keep the intake wide open.

The 9012 without DC pump I call the foam-meister. Two adjustments are possible, one for the height of the intake to the water line, and the other the air intake. I can not balance the two to any extent with extended testing, so use was demoted it to a QT tank. The picture shows the foam escaping on top and/or foam escaping on the bottom. I'll take it apart and check seem. I am not putting money into it at this point.

I used crazy glue to keep the blue silicone tabs attached to the magnets. They go everywhere otherwise on adjustment. Like to make it work better but functions as is.
