tunze osmolator 3155 kept filling

Morning,

I have a tunze osmolator 3155. Been in my tank for 7 months. I have not done any maintenance on it. I had a power fluctuation past two days, I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. I have pineapple sponges in my sump and just turned on my skimmer that’s been off for a month due to treating my tank with Ich attack.

I was watching TV and I kept hearing the osmilator turning on over and over and over and over again , over the hour and it concerned me . I saw the overflow compartment fill up to the top when I went and looked in the sump the water in the return section was way over the optical sensor . I don’t understand why it was running when the water was over the optical sensor . I unplugged it and clean the optical sensor with a cloth . It has not ran since .

What do you think the problem was this could’ve been a disaster if I was not home?

I have the second float shut off switch higher so that it doesn’t go off every time I turn my return pump off I wonder if I should lower that . Also, I have a gate valve for my overflow I’m thinking I should keep that open more . possibly it wasn’t keeping up ?

Do you have a remote reservoir hooked up to an ro/di or do you have a standalone reservoir you have to fill? If its the latter I think you may have had slight flooding, but overall everything would have been fine depended on the size of your reservoir.

I’m trying to find out what caused that problem in the first place . Also, I have a 5 gallon bucket hooked to a RO/DI line. The bucket has a barrel tender 2. I have a RO/DI shut off battery operated system that will cut the water supply if it detects water. I also have a finished basement underneath Lol

It could have been salt creep or sponges or algae on the optical sensor seeing as how cleaning it corrected the issue.
 
As long as the second emergency float switch was in place you would have been ok. Just make sure the amount of fresh water added before the float is activated does not cause a significant salinity change (that would be depending on your size tank).

I've had the same thing happen to me before and the cause was air bubbles. It was not a problem because the second sensor kept it from over filling. I got tired of hearing the emergency alarm go off during maintenance so I opened the box and turned off the float switch alarm.

Sure, I assume that would be the case. I should make it a habit to clean it.

I have my alarm on but the float switch in a different compartment that’s higher . I like to keep the alarm on just in case. I guess my problem was my over flow on the tank was filling up high. I think I had my gate valve closed to much possibly.
 
I believe these Tunze systems have 2 failsafe system. The float switch and a 10 min timeout. If the float doesn't stop it then after 10 mins it'll automatically shut off.

I'm still setting up my system but I have an Apex with the breakout box and a couple of float switches. Gonna use 1 in the sump (above the Tunze one) and 1 in the DT so that if either trips it'll turn off the ATO should all the other failsafes fail.

Not sure but if it's anything like the JBJ I have it will not auto-restart. So say the pump didn't start and reached the timeout, it'll just sit there until you reset the float switch or unplug and replug the power. I had this happen twice where the pump never started (still don't know why even with 2 pumps connected) and came home to tank full of bubbles from the return pump choking and a rise in salinity. I have now move it onto the Apex and have it turn off every 15 mins so if it goes into timeout the restart will bring it back online. Have not had another problem since.
 
Couple things to think about,
1. Make sure that your reservoir cannot exceed what your sump can handle.
2. Float switches are important
3. Tunze ATO toggle on when power cycled.

You can d/l the manual from BRS.
Here is some of the instructions. The pump should not restart once the controller shuts it off because of "has not reached proper height within 10 min. Error"

Red LED “Too low” is flashing = metering pump had
been operating for more than ten minutes and has
been switched off. The normal water level has not
been reached. Potential cause: Storage container
is empty; the hose is soiled or kinked; the pump
is defective; air in the pump; soiled, defective or
unhooked operating sensor (2). Reset is possible by
short disconnection from the mains.

Sensors, clean them gently in regular intervals as
scratching will damage the sensor.
Prevent air bubbles near the sensors.

 
If keep happening, I suggest to contact Tunze. Mine had similar issue and I sent it to them and they fixed it

I noticed today that in the eye there is a bubble inside the glass part. Near the bottom. I wonder if this is normal or a defect. Do you have a bubble in yours?
