Hello all!

So i'm currently in the market for some new power heads, The black friday deals have started at BRS. Has anyone used / using Tunze Nano streams? The couple that spark some interest are the 6095's. controllable from 528-2510 GPH.

The Gyre is on sale as well, I would be looking at the comparable GPH of the XF250. I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on a pair of MP40's for 700.00 :(

Thoughts on the Tunze/gyre?

I have a pair gyre xf250 and I like the sleek look of them, but wow the flow dramatically reduces in about a month once it gets dirty. It has so many parts and not the easiest to clean either.

Other than the required monthly maintenance of them, they do move some water and are pretty sleek.

I have two on one end of a red sea p500

Thanks for the input. What % do you run them at? with 2 thats over 10K GPH! i know 2 would be better that one, and right now the pump + controller is 271. the extra pump is like 160 or something so it's really not a bad deal, but i could get by with 1 for a while i think until later in the week when the pump goes on sale.

I have both gyres (3 of them) and tunze (2 6105s, 1 6095). The gyre has way more broad flow, it's just not close. They are however a bigger pain to maintain. They need to be cleaned more often and the parts wear. They need to be cleaned probably every month or so and I've bought the bearings/spacers or whatever for them after a year. The Tunze's are easy to maintain and very robust. The flow is good, but not nearly as wide and not as strong. They are built like Mack trucks though and with simple quarterly maintenance will most likely last for years and years without replacement parts.

What size is your tank?

You seem like the person to talk to then! My tank is a 110 gallon. It's 48 long 30 tall reef ready. I honestly can never remember front to back depth. I have some rock leaning against the back glass, I currently have a few cheapo hydors, so my thought if i got a gyre, (one now and one after the holidays probably) but for the one, i would leave one of the hydors on a wave maker on the back glass just to add a little bit more variety to the flow.

Or the 6095's getting 2 and placing them across from eachother which i would eventually do with the Gyre's anyways.

My Tunze 6100s are still running a decade later. I don't clean them until they are so caked up with coralline that the flow is impeded.

If you got the 6105 Tunzes, then you would likely never need the Gyres.

Well I'm setting up a new frag tank and just ordered another gyre 250 and controller set from BRS. As much as I like the Tunze for their simplicity and quality, the gyre is just difficult to beat for the widespread flow and different patterns it can run in. The expensive part of the gyre is the controller. It also makes the gyre stand out. The different patterns you can create with 2 gyres and their controller is amazing!

In the end if it were me, I would purchase the gyre xf250 and then another xf250 pump only down the road. As much as I dislike the cleaning and "wear parts" of the gyres, the type of flow they create is awesome for reef tanks. You could probably get away with the xf230, but I would advise against that. The gyres can be noisy when ran at 100%, so I would get the 250s and run them around 60%.

Tunze, gyre, the mp's are all great pumps. Dollar for dollar, despite their flaws, the gyre is just hard to beat.

I have the Tunze 6055s, which have a narrower flow than the 6095. It's almost too much for my 4 foot tank. The broader 6095 might have been better. But they have been VERY reliable and the support from Tunze USA is amazing.

I was looking more at the Nano's. I don't really like how intrusive the larger tunze pumps look. but i appreciate the input!

Perfect! I was set on the MP40's but they aren't on sale. and it's crazy how expensive they are. I'm getting ready to put the order in! Thanks for all your help!

Change of plans... If you order 500$ worth of stuff you get a free BRS hoodie,,, sooo i guess i'm getting both. Can't pass up a free hoodie!

You are welcome! I have no experience with the mp40s personally. The cost always gets me. Lol. I do believe they may go on sale for 15% off for black friday. I'm not 100%, but have a feeling, despite them never going on sale. You can do the math and thinking as far as that goes, but if you order the gyre, you will be happy with the flow for sure! Just remeber to clean them every other month or when they look dirty!

YEah i had to deal with the support for the ATO from Tunze and it was amazing. Great experience.
