I did some searches on the subject and from what I can tell most people do this infrequently. I tend to blast a few times a day. I have a hob filter and sometimes will run mechanical filtration and blasting will get more junk to go through the filter. I also feel like this is a great way to feed corals. I assume in the ocean there's plenty of "marine snow" flowing all the time so I feel like blasting often mimics this and provides plenty of food for corals without having to target feed. Anyone else stir things up frequently?

I do it in circulation dead spots right before water changes. You can get 18 inch long basters for like 12 bucks on ebay. I love mine, it's so handy.
