I wish i remembered who posted this first but i read about taking the sump filter sock before cleaning and collecting the copepods to feed dt. I tried it today on my 75 gal, not knowing much about this hobby also, and turned sock inside out in bucket. After this i sucked it into syringe then emptied it near my scooter blenny. Not sure if it was 100% effective or even if i can recognize what a copepod looks like....but I have NEVER seen my blenny spend 10 min in one spot nibbling at the sand[emoji2]. Again not my idea but awesome.

Not long ago, when I used socks, I did the same to save as many amphipods as I could and would reintroduce them back into my system. There's a big difference in copepods and amphipods.

Copepods will be mostly very small, almost microscopic in size. They are the tiny, typically white looking, dots on your glass that move in small amounts. Usually have a more round body.

Amphipods are much larger typically and resemble, in a very small way, a shrimp. Small, compacted elongated body and can be seen after lights out running around the sand and rock work.

I purposely discontinued using socks to stop catching copepods and amphipods in them.

I saw small white ones all over my glass a while back but these were visible tiny red ones. Im glad you mentioned that. Im thinking about discontinuing the sock.

Got keep my pod populations up, my Mandy has to eat! Lol

Socks are awesome at filtering water and keeping your sump clean, but if you keep gobies, especially red scooters or Mandarins and don't have a refugium post socks, then chances are your capturing a great deal of them without knowing it.

I use socks and I'll spend several minutes rescuing pods and starfish from inside out sock. In fact more recently my population is booming and I would love to know that is going through my whole system. The thing is, those dirty socks are brown and really dirty they collect a lot of waste. For those new to sock less what changes do you see?
