Turtle's Deep Blue Sea

Hello All, I see The Deep Blue was giving you the blu's for a minute, literally an amazing comeback. So a noob question here... GAC ? and GFO usage, I'm having a spike of nutrients and algae and was thinking of running
GFO and carbon then someone mentioned loss of corals? what gives?
Carbon is okay and fairly forgiving unless you use way more than recomended. GFO is VERY efficient and can strip your water extremely fast. Acros and sensitive type corals can die almost overnight if not used correctly. After killing off a few pieces using just 50% of the recommended dose i chose to use something else. JME

100%.

Go slow and add slow. Algae food is coral food.
Gac and gfo remove different things. Gac is focused on organics.

Neither is as efficent as a water change.

been feeding corals zooplankton and oyster feast one or other twice a week and always leads to a bloom so i stop for awhile then start agian

Ugh....

I my 14g I have given up on keeping the sand clean. There's algae and cyano growning down there. My corals are happy and colorful tho. I feed oyster feast a few drops every couple days. The six line and the shrimp get a pinch of pellets twice a day.

Yes, that urchin is irritating.

I just went to sleep and woke up... bam, cumulonimbus.
Swap the carbon. IMO.
If that doesn't work , swap the gfo.
One or the other is going to work and will indicate what the root prob is.
Meanwhile maybe you can google how to make a reactor with junk from the garage.

You won't get alge on the plugs.

Or coraline on my rocks, wait I HAD coraline on my rocks. Nice shiny white/gray rocks now.

Carbon and GFO are mixed in a mesh baggy. I could only find one... I'll replace them in a minute.

I will say it's a handy tool to have.
Mine is cool. I don't intend to run it full time w gfo. I have a cheap canister filer when i need a reactor.

Oh btw, its deffinatly diatoms. My chaeto was covered in brown. Light shake and it went away to float thru the water again.
Feels like sandpaper or light buffing compound between your fingers? Smells like brown.

No smell to the tank today... got my beard wet trying to sniff. Didnt really have much of a smell yesterday. Nowhere close to the swamp gas smell of a skimmer cup for sure. Can't get enough of it to do a feel test. It's a really light dusting on everything and floating thru the water.
