Turtle's Sushi Dream

Clean sand, clean tank, clean rock, clean water... time to put this sushi roll together.

Biggest issue... my mixing station isn't finished and I don't have a concrete way to pump water from the garage, into the house. It's about 9 feet of head, and probably 18 feet run from the ground where the tote is, to the top of the tank, going up the steps and around corners. The tiny pump I use to boost start a siphon when doing manual water changes was barely able to push a small trickle of water into the tank. I do have an old Jebao DCT 6000 pump and exactly one, 3/4" barb for the outlet. My 50 foot long hose is 1/2", so that's not going to mate up. A quick trip to the "blue home improvement store," I had what I needed to go from 3/4" barb to 1/2" barb by way of a 3/4" threaded coupling and a 3/4" thread to 3/4" barb, a 3/4" to 1/2" bushing and a 1/2" thread to 1/2" barb, and a piece of 3/4" hose.

This was MUCH faster, and in just a few minutes I had enough water to start placing rocks back in the tank. I had thoroughly mixed up all the rocks, like a humpty dumpty... my scape I had fallen in love with wasn't going back together again. Oh well, new year new tank... or whatever the kids are saying.

This was the design I settled on. The left is a few free standing structures with overhangs, and on the right is a multi cave with a lot of hollow space for the fish to have places to hide.

There is only one more ingredient for this sushi roll, and that is the sand. I decided to just pour it in, as it was completely washed of any fine particulates. It was very cool to be able to just pour the sand in the tank, and make absolutely no cloud at all.

Once all the sand was in, it was time to finish filling the sump and turn all the equipment back on. The temp was reading 64F after pumping it up from the garage and playing stack the rocks, so I would need to let that cycle around for hours to heat up all the way. The next day around mid morning the temp was reading 76F so I felt comfortable moving my livestock over. There was a slight cloud to the tank, but it wasn't horrible. I figured it was just a minor bacteria bloom, and probably came from the water I was using to rinse the rocks after scrubbing... it had gotten pretty funky towards the end.

The first step was to get the rock out safely so nobody got crushed. I placed it all back in the sump, where it can continue to grow sponges and all kinds of neat things in the dark. After the rock was placed in the sump, I drained most of the water from the barrel to help me catch the fish.

This giant brittle star has been thru 3 tanks now, and I've had it for 6 years. That is a large Florida fighting conch it is climbing over, and when stretched out, it would touch both edges of a dinner plate. When I originally got it, I had a massive asterina starfish population, and not terribly long after adding it I haven't had an asterina since. I doubt it was eating them, but it likely is a way better scavenger and completely took over the roll they were filling.

Later that evening, the bacteria bloom had gotten MUCH worse. The tank was very cloudy, but everything still seemed to be acting the same as they had been. A few corals were upset still, but they had been upset before this whole adventure. The gorgonian, which I was told would be the most likely to not make it thru a total tank cleaning... was open and swaying in the current like nothing was going on.

After work, and armed with a picture of a cloudy tank and a 23 month old toddler, we headed across town to the LFS where a trusted "old school" reefer works. I told him everything we had done, he liked it all, and I showed him the picture and asked him what he would do. He asked me a few questions and we ended up with a game plan of products to clear the floaty bacteria up, reduce any free nutrients feeding the floaty bacteria and strengthen my biological filter to prevent more of the floaty bacteria from growing.

After arriving back home from work and the LFS, the tank had cleared itself up a lot from the night before. I went ahead and added the products like instructed to make sure I stayed on top of things and they didn't turn and get worse. The Clarity made the water cloudy again, but the directions said that is normal, and a sign that it is working. It's a flocculant that binds small particles together and allows the filter to remove them easier.

Sunday Funday... I know, I'm late posting again. Tested water params... salinity and alkalinity were a bit low. I filled the ATO with left over salt water from "The Great Cleaning." I also added a little high capacity GFO to my media bag with the Seachem SeaGel. Everything in the tank is looking great with the exception of the gorgonian has been closed since I added the cleaning corducts, and the toadstool hasn't looked like a toadstool at all since I cleaned up the tank. The gorg is salinity sensitive, so hopefully once that is corrected it will get out of its depression.

Oh, salinity came in at 1.022-1.023ish

Imagine if you will, a world where it's still Sunday and Turtle didn't miss testing his water by two days...

Salinity is at 1.024. ATO is slap full of RODI at the moment but when it empties in a day or two I'll fill it back up with salt water.

Alk is low, NO3 and PO4 actually don't look bad. I need to order calcium reagent and more alk reagent. I mixed up 1 liter of All For Reef. Tomorrow once it's thoroughly mixed I'll set it up on the dosing pump.

Insomnia at 1am... so I'll type up a quick update.

Got my dosing container out of storage and cleaned it up. Set up a schedule on my dosing pump and filled the container, got tubes hooked up... ect. Added the 1l of All For Reef powder I mixed yesterday to the container and since it holds 2l in each of the three compartments, I mixed another liter and topped it off.

Dosing directions say to add 5ml per 100l of tank water. I have no real comprehension of liters(its like 26 gallons), so I guesstimated about 30ml a day... more of a WAG... I'll continue to test and adjust as needed.

It's Sunday and Turtle did his water change and tested water on time!

Tank is looking great, corals are happy, coraline is coming back from where it was bleached after getting cleaned with a wire brush and hydrogen peroxide. The urchins will take care of that tho, lol. Alk has also come up from last week, bringing up salinity, dosing and the water change all probably had an effect on that.

SG 1.025
Alk 7.8dkh
NO3 8.2
PO4 0.05

Sooo... I've been busy. The algae issues would not go away, so I kinda just let the tank go for a few months. Eventually I totally reset the tank and started from scratch. Just before I did that we welcomed my second son into the world, so all my spare time and resources were occupied.

I've got all new lights, new rock, new sand, new gyres hooked to a Hydros Wave Engine... I bought a friend of mine a new Icecap bio brick and stuck the well established one in the sump. I also added back the rock I had in the sump that didn't have algae issues. So far. I haven't had any issues with a cycle, and I'm in the brown fuzzy diatom stage. Fish and corals all look happy and healthy... and my tank FINALLY looks good, albeit a bit lacking on coral for a tank that has been set up for 2 years...

Congrats on the new lil frag... :)

Treated myself to a few corals for my birthday this past weekend. Took the family to the zoo and stopped by a LFS that is close by.

Picked these up from Jamrock when we were on vacation down there last month.
