Twin 90g In Wall Reef Tanks

I purchased my first home with my girlfriend a week ago. The whole process has been exciting. I now have an enormous list of work to do to finish my move, landscape the yard, and start furnishing the inside of the house. But as the case probably would be for a lot of us, that list hasn't gotten much shorter, but I have made a lot of progress planning and developing my first fish room. Coming from someone that has been running a 90g mixed reef in a small apartment for the last two years, the idea of a dedicated fish room seems too good to be true.

I thought about the idea of putting in a 200g reef in the living room of the house, with the sump and fish room plummed in the basement underneath. But I was concerned about the structural integrity of the floor and knew that putting 2000 lbs of weight on the floor would always be a concern in the back of my mind. Also, after destroying the floor in my apartment over the last two years, I have decided that there would a lot of value in the basement housing all aquaria in this house.

The basement has about 500 feet of finished area and another 500 square feet of unfinished area on the other side of an interior wall.

After a few more days of living here, that list of things I need to do hasn't gotten very much shorter, but the plans for the fish room have started to finalize. I looked into a few 200g tanks I found on craigslist and facebook marketplace, but I was too concerned about getting them moved into my basement. I then started to think about getting a second 90g to match my current system. It could look really nice to have a 90g LPS and Softy tank set up next to a 90g full-blown SPS reef. Sense I have the space for a dedicated fish room, I could plumb these two tanks (and anything else that I can dream up) into the same sump. If the two tanks were a part of the same system, that would mean only a single water change schedule, only a single water testing schedule, and a large water volume for stability. Win, win, win! I picked up a used 90g from craigslist and realized that the two 90g tanks would look really cool next to each other if they were both in the wall between the finished space and the utility room. I have some stretch goals of eventually plumbing a 40g breeder as a frag tank, a 10g nano tank with only GSP and another 10g nano tank with only pulse xenia into this system as well. However, those additions can come at a later date.


It has been about two weeks of living here now. My dad came over this weekend and helped me cut the first of two 90g sized holes in the drywall. It is officially too late to turn back!

We then started to build a stand with 2x4s that were connected to the frame of the wall.

We got the stand wrapped up and put the first of the two tanks on the stand and it started to feel very real.

I put a DIY sump beneath the stand and set up the plumbing. The tank came with a siphon based overflow, which I was hoping to get away from, but it works for now. I may get a different overflow and drill the tank in the future.

I added some trim to the front of the tank and this made it look like the tank was inside a picture frame. I also started to (slowly) get the tank wet. My RODI unit was working extra hard mixing up 120g or so of water.

I made the freshwater saltwater today and I ordered a Jebao adjustable return pump and picked up an Octo protein skimmer. I plan to run this berlin style with the drains going first into a refugium section and then into the protein skimmer section after.

I went with two Hydra 32 leds to start off. My plan is to use these for the SPS tank. I may have to add an additional fixutre down the road if the two is not enough light.

The lights are hanging on a PVC pipe. This definitely doesn't look awesome, but one of the perks of an in wall fish tank is that it doesn't matter if the light fixtures don't look great! You can only see them from the utility room.

I have had saltware running in the system for about a week now. I started to move some fish and coral over to this system from the 90g tank that is currently running at my old apartment.

Sorry for the overfly blue light without any filter, but this is what the front of the tank looks like after the first batch of coral was moved in. The coral has only been in the tank for about an hour, but It feels really good to look at the progress so far!

A lot has happened in the last month. I added all of the corals from my tank that was previously set up and running at my apartment. They are starting to settle in nicely! The alk consumption is much less now than it was with the same corals in the apartment, so I don't think that much growth is happening yet. But polyps are out, and the tank looks happy. I do have a few spots of algae popping up, which I believe is due to the phosphate sitting at 0.2ppm. Just loaded some GFO in my reactor, so I am hoping that takes care of it.

I had all of the corals that I put in the second 90 sitting in a temporary holding tank. I have a lot of flow growing through the first 90, and so some of these corals wouldn't have liked it in that tank.

I have the second 90 first draining into about a 30 gallon sump that is elevated on a stand that I built. I drilled two holes in the side of this sump in the chamber where the return pump would usually sit. This drains into the main sump, which holds about 60 gallons. Right now, all that is running in this is a protein skimmer, heater, some brightwell bio bricks, and an auto top off. Eventually, I will have plenty of room to add a large refugium and maybe use one chamber for a frag tank. I also may plumb a 40 gallon tank that I am currently using a QT tank into this sump and use that as a frag tank. Lots of options and lots of room! I have the two 90 gallon displays plumbed separately as of now because I am still adding fish to the second 90 gallon tank, and if there is a parasite outbreak, I want it to stay isolated to one of the two displays. After the fish are stocked in the second 90 gallon tank, I will plumb them both together.

Absolutely fantastic. I also have a potential dedicated fish room in my basement, and once I renovate, I'd love to do something similar. Great job.
 
The tanks have been running for about 3 months at this point. The tank that I have mostly sps coral in has been starting to settle in, so I wanted to give an update. About 90 days in, this tank got a brutal case of bryopsis mixed with green hair algae. I do feed heavy and had been dosing amino acids. However, I was also running a sizeable refugium, a protein skimmer, and was doing 25% weekly water changes via an auto water system. I assumed that the problem would be cured with getting my phosphates and nitrates down, but my nitrates were less than 1ppm and my phosphates were 0.0 measured with the Hanna Checker. At this point, I was lost. I assumed that the dry rock I started the tank with was leaching phosphate that the algae was taking up before my Hanna Checker was testing for it. I went through a few lengthy sessions manually removing algae (and getting bit up by my clowns), but it couldn't keep up with the algae growth in the display. I decided to try Vibrant after a few BRS TV episodes showing how effective it is. My understanding is that this product is cultured bacteria that eats algae. This did mean that I had to shut down my refugium because the bacteria would eat away at that algae as well. It took about 4 weeks, but vibrant solved my algae problems entirely. I am now feeding as heavy as ever and dosing 15ml of acropower per day and haven't seen a spec of algae in weeks. I see a noticeable negative response from my lps for the first few days after each dose of vibrant, but I think it is worth it. Here are a few shots of how the tank has progressed through the first 3 months.

I am clearly still a beginner at reef photography. Just have been making the lights white when I take pictures. Open to any suggestions!

Wow brother soo cool , nice work you did very impressive. It’s exactly what I want to do with a 120gal I have Wanna do build in garage and cut big hole into wife’s formal living room (that your not allowed in except on Christmas and other special occasions, better not be lounging in there lol I’m gonna push it into room 2-3 inches then wrap around it with old ship rope

I decided that I wanted to try to put some more effort into a photo. Still a ton to learn, but I like this photo better than what I have taken in the past.

Just another little tank update! I am so happy with the Vibrant product. I am feeding a ton and adding a lot of amino acids. The corals seem to be rewarding me for it. For some reason, I can't seem to get that green slimer in the top middle to want to grow. The color is good, but I don't think it is any bigger than it was on day 1. Thinking about moving it to see if that makes a difference.
