I am planning on running two return pumps, both D/C each powering their own return completely independent from each other. I will aim for 5x tank turn over through the sump. Run one side at 3x through the UV for Dino and the other side at 2x. Any issues that one can see running it this way? Almost, all research I have seen shows both pumps going through some kind of split with check valves. Why not run each independently?

For over 20yrs continuously, I have always run 2 independent external Iwaki AC pumps (yes they have been replaced over the years as needed) with no negative issues that I can find. When one eventually fails, I can isolate that line and water is still circulating from my sump. I cannot advise on flow for UV but would like to hear how that works out for you. I am still an old timer and use an external HSA protein skimmer with a 3rd Iwaki AC pump. Yea the electric company likes me! Some day I will l probably go to DC.

I have the split system with the check valves and a motorized ball valve between the 2 pumps. One pump runs the filter wall and one is the return to the tanks. Both pumps are Abyzz A200 running at 62%. If either pump were to fail, or require maintenance with the push of a button the motorized ball valve connects the 2 sides and either pump can take over running the entire system.

I used to travel a bunch for work and this gave me the means of insuring that I could always have flow to everything.

2 separate pumps on their own return. It’s a no brainer for me and have been doing it many years. Doing this has saved some corals for sure when I travel.
