Hey fellow reefers.

So quick question. I am new to this hobby being in it for less than a year. Currently I have a 75 gallon salt water reef tank.

Currently I am running the Penn Plax Cascade 1000 Cannoster Filter rated for an 100gal and a Seachem Tidal 75 hang on filter rated for a 75gal. Due to water clarity I recently got a UV filter for my tank as well. I feel like this is too much filtration and water flow for my fish. I am also running a Red Sea Reef wave45 on my tank.

Is too much filtration bad for a tank? I’m considering removing the tidal because one it will eliminate the need to maintain two filters, lower noise level, and decrease the flow of the tank.

Any suggestions and info on the pros and cons of running two filters would be greatly appreciated.

Just one canister would be fine. We don’t want to strip the waters.
Keep it clean though.

I ran one Aqua clear filter and a HOB skimmer on 65g for years.

Not too much as I run sump with skimmer-UV-Algae Scrubber, CA reactor and another reactor, however be sure to service your filters regularly. Both units you have are mechanical filters and you want to have mechanical , biological and chemical to manage proper water quality. The units you have will polish water and trap particles via the cartridge.
Chemical is what traps and breaks down chemical compounds such as feces and uneaten food often accomplished carbon and GFO
Biological is what utilizes the natural process of biological filtration such as use of ceramic nuggets, bio blocks, and microscopic bacteria surfaces. Best it to add or use a hang on refugium such as Reef octopus or AquaMaxx unit and even add a hang on skimmer such as ice cap K1- or K2 100

first of all, what are your water parameters running all of this filtration? as in, what is your no3/po4?

too much filtration is actually bad as you can bottom out your nutrients. but if you're running all of that and you have good levels, then i do not see how a UV would negatively affect you. but if water clarity is your issue, carbon can fix that without the need of a UV unless you want the option of running different flow in it for bacteria (ICH, diatoms, etc)

I have a 75 gallon reef with a fluval fx4 and a fluval 407. It's always been my understanding and practice that there is never too much filtration, especially if it's a heavy stocked tank. You may want to look into a canister filter with UV sterilizer to help with water quality and maybe some chemi- pure as well. Toss a bag of that into your HOB tidal

IMHO - there is no such thing as 'too much flow' IF the flow is variable - from different directions. If you think about the volumes of water flowing on the natural reef, back and forth, etc. it's far higher than a tank. My concerns relate to the fact that most of those filters produce a constant flow in one direction. Additionally, the benefit of 2 filters in place - means you have some redundancy if one fails. (or one needs cleaning)
