After reading so much about quarantine tanks it seems that you need two, one for fish and one for corals / inverts. Mainly because of treating fish with copper.

Do a lot of people have two quarantine tanks?

Yep. You need the coral/invert QT for 76 days to starve out ich/velvet, and observation, dips, etc. And of course the fish QT for prophylactic treatment. I also keep a hospital tank ready with all the equipment, just add water.

Agreed. I have two fish quarantines (but I QT a lot of fish and have more than one tank) and two coral quarantines (but really, one will be a regular reef tank once my 180 is full of coral and inverts! :)

I do/will as well. Nothing will go into my tank without going through QT. I plan a pair of both fish and coral QT as I start stocking the tank and then pair down from there.

Better safe then sorry!

I do now. Velvet is NO joke!!

20 gallon AIO frag.
x2 10G fish qt

Smart!!

I now have a 10 gallon Coral/invert QT, 20 gallon fish QT and 10 gallon hospital tank at the ready if need be!

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll end up with 4 tanks. I started with a BioCube16 back in March. That one is doing well and I'm almost done setting up the RS 525XL. I'll have to get two small tanks and set them up as the QT's.

Do you have the QT ones running all the time? I would think you need to so it's ready for use and not needing to be cycled every time you add something.

I would think if you have an appropriate amount of seeded media in your DT eventually you won't need a constantly running QT.

QTs need to be completely torn down, cleaned, sanitized and dried between usage. That being said, nothing wrong with starting one up just in case you come across that one fish you have always wanted - and you would be ready ;)

This is what I do.

This is where a hang on back filter comes in handy. Seed the filter in your DT sump. Have the QT running empty, then just add the filter. Ready and waiting QT.

+1 Exactly. Forgot to mention I keep both an foam filter for foam bubble filter and the sponge filter for a HOB in the sump.

I leave mine running for several batches, but in truth eventually stuff will build up and require sterilization.

Fish like copperband butterflies, regal angels, moorish idols, and most wrasse appreciate a more stable qt that’s been used previously, IME

Since I'll be stocking a new 525 I think I'll set up the QTs and let them run for a while. They can run through their cycle and be ready when I start. The 525 will take a while to get stocked and I'm going to do it very slowly.
