Currently I have a 65 gallon reef tank. I put a blue tang in about three months ago. It's about the size of a half dollar. He seems to be doing very well. We are waiting for our home to be built and have already purchased a 250 gallon tank that I will transfer everything over to in about a year. My question is in the mean time can I put a white cheek about the same size in the tank until then or will they go at it? Any info would be great.

I would wait for the big tank to be up and running. They may not last a year in a 65..

The other fish are a couple of clowns and a cardinal. It also may be a little less then a year I'm just looking worst case. I just read bad stories about two tangs in one tank.

Do not put another tang in that tank. It would be irresponsible.
If you know that your moving, just wait. Patience is a virtue in this hobby. ;)

Why rush?

Agreed, and you never know. Life has a way of messing with ya. Could turn into a year and a half...Wait on the tang. Good luck with the new house!

I think you can put another tang in there for the coming year if you're certain of the upgrade. However, I would strongly advise against putting an Acanthurus species in there. One of the reasosn for people to suggest against putting tangs in smaller tanks has more to do with the demeanor of the tangs in question than their ultimate size. So, a small Zebrasoma tang would be fine IME/O for the coming year.

Yeah it's a for sure upgrade. I already have the tank just no room yet. So the white cheek is mean? Or hard to keep ? The blue hippo I have is such a cool fish. Him and the clowns all swim together all the time and I don't want to put anything in there that will make it unhappy

They're difficult to keep and get stressed/nervous in confined spaces, making them even more difficult.

It would be easier on the fish to just wait until the new tank is up and running. Setting up a tank in a new place is a huge PITA, takes longer than expected and something will go wrong. No need to add the stress of a second tang.

Plus, your blue tang (( going to assume P. hepatus )) has a good chance of out growing your 65 over the coming year.

I would just wait. Putting two in a 65 would most likely lead to some aggression. Plus like others have said, like is pretty unexpected, you never know what could come up to put the upgrade on hold.
