hey guys was hoping somone could give some advice. I have a 10" tall green tyree with a head about 8 " round. I need to frag this thing asap as it has just grown way to big for my tank. My question is, how big would you make each frag? 1"x1"? I've seen the video about using a toothpick and securing with a rubberband using the ends of the pick. About how long does it take for it to attach to the disk and secondly, how long before it starts to grow a stalk? Thanks

Looks like your frag was about 1/2" by 1". Has it grown nicely since then? If i did sizes liek that i could get 20 frags easy from where i want to trim it back.

the easiest way is to glue it on, ive tried the toothpick, fishing line (never tried putting it through the body) and i glued it, and the glued piece did the best for me
it attached quicker and it grew quicker
the ones that i tried to get to attach by itself took about a month before it attached

my video, sounds like my video? may not be the best way to frag them i redid and workeds best with a vale or mesh shirt. using the tooth pick can be a pain and or you might loose some flesh. using the mesh shirt or vale there is no lose of flesh! 1 to 2 inches works , try to lay it down so the cut side it touching the rock or frag. should attach in a matter of days. i have had some take 1 week or more but most the time they attach in a day or so. being a small frag like that take a little while to get up in size but when it does they are nice.

It was some area group video on reef central. Was that yours? Where the guy cut the toadstool with the scissors?

i am using somethings like this and have found it to work with out any problem. just dont wrap it tight , leave losse some what and rubber band the mesh to the frag. i have dont it other was as well but think the mesh shirt works well.

Thats it, see your famous! :hammer:

Somone else sugessted gluing 1/2 of the cut piece to a rock so that the newly cut piece is totally on the frag disk. This way in a few days when the glue stops holding it should already be attached for it to matter.

where do you find mesh shirts? I have some plastic ones that come wrapped around nitrogen and reclaim bottles,

the problem with the glue is the lose of flesh and if it doesnt attach by the time the flesh releases from the glue it may travel around your tank. then you have to find them. glueing i think would work like the other ways not so good.

If you want to use mesh, you can buy bridal veil in different mesh sizes at Walmart or any fabric store for about fifty cents a yard.

i actually have one of those baskets, was about to get rid of it cause i got a new one. So what do you do wit it, you wrap it around the piece until it secures to the disk?

ya , cut out a small section of the mesh , so you can cage the coral to the frag and place in a low flow for a couple days to a week. dont leave any opening for the coral to escape out of or have hermit or snail get in and knock it out. you can check then now and then. use a rubber band to hold the mesh on. its ok if thr coral floats or flop around a little at most it will tell you when they are secure and ready to have the mesh removed.

That is a pretty neat idea, then you just have to glue the mesh down to the rock? I'm gonna try it out and do some frags.

i just used superglue gel and glued right to the cut tissue and had no problems
it never came off and growing again

the way i have done it before, is to cut a circle around the top of the head. then cut small pieces off the circle.

then place all the little frag cuttings into a little tuppaware container filled with rock rubble. and then place in an area of low flow. the toadstool frags will self attach themselves to the rock rubble within a week or two. then you can do whatever you want with them.
