Uhm, did my tuxedo urchin bite it?

Got him about a week ago, was tearing up what I thought was algea at the time - I am battling dinos (Ostreopsis). Could that have killed him? He hasn't moved since this morning..

I flipped him over and moved him to a lower flow area. I did notice some of his spines moving

Fudgeeeeee. Yea I noticed a bare area that was not bare before. How long do I have before he becomes a toxin? He's definitely not dead yet, I did notice him moving around once I flipped him.

Ostreopsis dinos are toxic... maybe throw a bag of GAC in the sump to help draw out some toxins just in case.

I’d try putting him in a container and see if he rebounds. If not you can just dump him without harming your DT.

I’d try putting him in a container and see if he rebounds. If not you can just dump him without harming your DT.

I can get him and toss him in a Tupperware container, wouldn't a lack of oxygen harm him? What about putting him in my coral qt - I have hermits and snails in there doing fine.

Most dinos are toxic, especially when they are dying. GAC is just activated carbon. It helps to pull out toxins, smells, etc... from the water. Just rinse it very well prior to putting in the tank... the dust fines are known to cause HLLE disease. But using just occasionally isn't an issue.

Just don’t put a cover on it. Or your coral qt is ok as long as you get him out quickly if he croaks.

I'm running carbon and have been for a while, in a BRS reactor. So I guess I'm good there. I may need to change some out.

My tuxedo stays in same spot for days sometimes. Then all over the tank the next few. It will take a few days after it dies for it to start breaking down to harm the tank in any way. A few years ago had a pin cushion urchin die, probably from old age. When it did she was moving one minute, next minute all the spines were retracted and that was it

Unless this is a brand new tiny tank that will crash from one death I would leave it be for now. At least while the spines are still moving. But once it really starts dropping lots of spines that will be a different story

I've lost one after a dino battle as well a ways back. He shed most of his spines and I knew that was my que to pull him out

Sorry to hear that. Yes, for doing very little they are actually quite fascinating to watch. I have a Green Urchin that has survived almost anything; the multicolors seem to be less resilient and the purple ones with white spines are the most fragile (both my red and blue tuexdo have been doing really well along with the green one). Didn't have much luck with the long spine ones either, to be honest.

If you can find them, I highly recommend the radiant urchins. They have this neon pattern that makes them look like something alien out of The Abyss at night.
