The whole idea revolves around starving your corals. As they lighten up you get better colors but take it too far they will do exactly that and starve. The trick is to keep an eye on your tank and find the right balance which isn't always easy, it takes some practice. If you think you've takin it too far by all means stop dosing and let everything catch up and you can slowly start again when you feel the need.
I wanted to try ULN but I found out exactly what it was and Im not really a fan of it at all. It can cause A LOT of problems, and its not always the best either. I dose vodka, but Im far from ULNS standerds.
I think SPS do better with out the ULNS IMHO. Even one of the best SPS keepers John at Your Reef said that SPS like a lil crap in their water, it keeps their color deep and rich.
And as long as they are happy, they are going to grow IMHO. Lee has more info on it though.

Keeping a ulns is not for every one man it's very tricky!!!!! Biggest problem is each coral is built of there own chemistry one likes it the next don't.... The balance act is very decieving and people call it quits for that reason..... I have a sticky with all sorts of info in the chemistry forum I believe... Pretty much lots of patience, dosing, and money is what it boils down to.... Also there is no test kits for running one it's all about knowing your corals and just when you think you do someone like calfo will through a wrench in your program:tongue: I always thought great pe meant the corals were happy and doing well he states it's starving and reaching for more light/food lol.....

I agree with clowns and Troy. Ive taken my vodka dosing a little too far a couple times and learned the hard way. I think carbon dosing can be very useful to fix problem areas but yes ULNS is tough. If you want your corals to grow just keep your tank stable and give em time. Ive had many take forever to take off and then just explode one day and grow like crazy.

Ulns is not anything new it has been around for years. zeovit is a prime example of ulns application that has proven to work if you are into mainly sps you really want the least amount of phos and nitrates. As phosphates inhibits calcification in corals
so i guess that because i have good color and growth with no PE during the day, thats ok? i do have great pe at night though,..... troy do you have a link to calfos PE explanantion

Same here, no pe on any of my sticks during the day, but I have a tri color digitata with huge brown polyps 24/7 and a monti cap with green pe.

natural phos concentrations on a reef are at about .03ppm ulns shoots for zero. A lot of very smart very experienced people have mocked the idea of "ulns". keeping phos and trates under control is important but numerous times people have shown it makes corals more suseptable to changes causing loss of color, bleaching and death. I do shoot for low phos and trates but the idea unls is just crazy to me. A natural reef has alot of nutrients on it otherwise how would a good chunk of the worlds biomass be located in these small areas?? I have limited experience in biology and chemistry but i know you have to have some nutrients to grow anything whether its plants or corals.
Would bio pellets be a good way to keep a LNS and not a ULNS?
