ULTRA MEAT CORAL $700

So my local LFS is offering me this Meet coral for $700. The reason why they’re selling it to cheap is because he said he wants more room in his frag tank he’s been sitting on it for a year it looks healthy. So my question to you is do you think this is a good deal? it would be my first meet coral. Thanks in advance

And the only reason why I asked is because 700 is a lot of money

Id rather get a few others than 1 $700 coral. Have you kept related corals like scolys?
I shop at to love the reef often. He has nice stuff.

Yes All I have is Scolys I’m thinking it’s going to be the same kind of care level my goal is to get a rid of all rock work and just have floating shelves and lining the bottom of the tank with Scolys

Personally, I’d pass. That is normal price for meat coral lol not a discount . Maybe the price tag was inflated so it appears discount .

Any meat coral /Acan owners chime in !

Not sure that is cool to say to be honest. People pay various prices for various reasons. Others shop around or trade from fellow hobbyist.

I was actually just looking at the prices on these guys for another thread the other day - they were looking at $700 for an 8" orange outside and blue inside. As I mentioned in the quote below, $500-$700 seems to be the typical pricing for these guys.

I’m definitely not a coral expert at this point, but looking online it seems prices on these corals vary wildly (I’ve seen it range from $145 for an all blue, 4” specimen up to a ridiculous $4,500 for an “ultra rainbow” kind of specimen). That said, standard pricing for nice pieces of these seems to be from ~$500-$700. The only other Acanthophyllia I’ve seen with this specific color combo was listed as 4-5” for $600.

So, given that it’s a good size and that the color combo seems to be pretty rare, I’d guess $700 is a fair price.

And the other thing is if I buy a coral online of similar color that might be cheaper what’s to say it’ll even make it in one piece to my destination. These corals have very spiny skeletons that can easily be damaged. So do you think that price would be justified for knowing you’ll get a piece that is not damaged when you pick it up in person.

If you like it and it’s worth $700 to you then buy it, but beware of buying into the “I’m selling you this for cheap” do u think there are more corals on the market or more hobbyists purchasing the coral? From anyone other than local hobbyist you do business with multiple times, you won’t be getting a “too good to be true” deal

even the $5 frags on live sales require you to spend $$$ on the other sale items, averaging out the price per piece to weigh in their favor

if u like it buy it, is beautiful!!!! But you can get a lot more coral for 7 bills

Sorry, to clarify, $500-$700 seems to be the industry norm in North America in pricing for these corals. So, yes, the $700 this shop is asking is a normal asking price for others too.

I agree that the price on these is outrageously steep. Normally, I'd blame at least part of it on the size of the coral, but there are other similarly sized LPS that are way cheaper. So, it really does seem to be a situation of the industry charging that much because it can.

So conclusion I’m thinking to see what else there is out there. My only problem is I see some online that are nice that are cheaper but the shipping is what scares me. There’s so many What Ifs. If the bag gets damaged on the way. If the package gets delayed. If I don’t get why I pay for. Do you guys know any industry that goes above and beyond packaging to protect the lives of these corals to get to your home?

It seems like hes not really giving much of a “discount”. Thats close to the range of what it should be. 700-1k.
1600$ is why he has been sitting on it

This is normal pricing for a meat coral unfortunately. It just feels like you are getting a deal because they are marking down a coral that was already way overpriced

Mine is similar in color and I paid $480 cash with no receipt from a lfs over a year ago so $700 isn't terrible. This was from the owner not some shady deal with an employee. $1600 IMO is rediculus. The one I have was priced at $900 and I watched it for almost a year before I asked what the best cash price would be.
Just an FYI and your experience may vary but mine is finicky. I have it in a reefer 170 and want it in my 180g but when I move it there it deflates and stays deflated. I've left it there for 3 weeks hoping it would adjust. After staying deflated for 3 weeks I moved it back to my smaller tank and it was fully inflated within 24 hours. Parameters are almost identiack7wirh very similar lighting. Another coral mystery for me.

I do not disagree. However the onus is on the hobbyist to stop it. Somethings I can understand as it relates to captive bred or raised fish. Coral aquaculture not so much. Hobbyist to hobbyist I also don't understand in some cases.

We can probably both agree that A, it is hobby, and B, it started with naming color strains, and C, probably the biggest being social media. These are just my opinions mind you.
