Ultraviolet Stunner strips

Well I feel an s-ton better about putting it in there, I'm going to be adding a couple more Actinic strips to brighten everything up and leave the uv in. Thanks guys!

The UV stunner strips don't put out a truly UV light, which is good. They put out 403nm light which is a deep violet.

You don't want to run true UV on your aquarium. If you do, the corals have to spend more energy to protect themselves from the UV rays and it has been recently proven that their protection is actually colorless.

I imagine true uv would be hard on the fishes eyesight as well..

Hey CJ, can you link me to that study? Last I had heard the UV was known to promote color in the corals, but that info is rather outdated.

Also- to those saying UV blinds fish-how do fish deal with it in nature? Or are there sunglasses they wear on the reef and take off for photos?

I imagine that fish are quite a bit further down in nature, that or the fish sunglasses idea;)

A lot of reefs are exposed at low-tide, so can't be too deep during high tide. I'm thinking sun-glasses or visors. Can someone photo-shop a Napolean wrasse with a cute little pink visor?

So if I added an uv led strip to my evolution led powered tank, would it help some corals with their color preservation?

I think thats what they are saying, not just preserving, but enhancing.

Lol absolutely!! I could try to make it a little better for you, although you won't be able to tell if its avatar size;)

Sorry, missed this. I'm pretty sure that it was in a recent issue of Advanced Aquariast, but I'll try to track it down.

I have also read that the stunner strips are not "true U.V."
I think anything above 400nm is not true UV if I remember correctly, but I read that a long time ago...

I'm glad its not, now I have no problem with overloading my tank with them!

Bryan, do you have an update on the UV LEDs? Did they bring more color out to your SPS? I'm trying to decide if I want to add more blue or if I should try the UV LED.
