Umbrella shaped zoa ?

Does anyone know why zoanthids take on an umbrella shape ? I have a frag plug with 3 polyps on it and one of them turns into this umbrella shape eveyday when the lights come on. It looks kind of funky i dont know if its normal or something is wrong.

Yup, I've noticed that on my 12+ years experience. Some even stretch for lights and when it's being fed.

It's part of their daily behavioral living pattern. Some even excrete from an umbrella shape and it goes back to normal figure thereafter.

I just posted this same question in my local forum. I have a one polyp poly frag that does the same thing. I have only had the frag a couple of months but it has put out three babies, so it is apparently liking life in my tank. I was advised not to worry about it

Yup, just part of their normal behavioral routine. Nothing to worry.

Yeah i guess it is normal but it looks kind of ugly in my opinion lol i want it to be the normal shape lol

Give it some time, it'll stop doing that after a while
