So i wanna kinda let people no who have high salt levels that it migt not be the best thing for your tank. So when i did water changes i havnt added and salt ( well not aalot) and ive been seeing great growth over the year with coral. 1 new polyp every 2 days with all zoas and amazing growth with mushrooms and star polyps. Ive have my salt at 1.018! My other tank is in the "safe zone" but ive been having better sucess with the tank with low salt. Just a quick thought too try low salt!

What are you measuring your salt with, hydrometer or refractometer?

I wouldn't trust that reading those thing are not accurate, and have been known to be way off.

I would like to see some pics too.

ditch the hydro and then get back to us when you pick up a refractometer. ive literally put 3 of the same brand hydros next to each other and gotten 3 absolutely different readings

FYI --- Hydrometer v Refractometer

I have used a hydrometer for many years. More than 10. However I recently purchased a refratometer. When I make water changes I double check one against the other. I have yet to find a difference. I have been doing this check consistently during the past 3 months. Just wanted to pass this on.

While I am sure there are quality differences in each piece of equipment the ones I use have been equal.

Good luck with whichever you choose.

Yeah, I'm going to say that your hydro is off. Not to argue about growth because it's different in every tank due to lighting, parameters and care. Maybe your colonies are larger, maybe they are more of a common species that reproduce quickly, too many factors.

All I know if I use a refractor meter and I make batches of water by the 100g. Check my tank salinity and match it against the mix, the mixed water stays consistent because I have a lid over it.

I guess as long as your hydro is reading the same with mix and tank water no real problems come up. Even at high or low salinity, most of the time salt levels increase over time as with any other parameter.
