I awoke this morning kind of curious, I have been fighting dino's for a while, so I had just completed 7 days lights out tank covered with black plastic, low and behold the ato stuck on, sump overfilled, not overflowed, skimmer overflowed now all the muck that was in the cup is back in the tank. All of this happened last night, I was going to clean out the skimmer today and suck out any loose stuff from dt and sump it's just unbelievable!! Now I guess I'll have to wait on evaporation, I'm ready to pull my hair out, but I'm bald already!!(foiled again), thanks for letting me vent!!

Personally I'd be doing a water change ;)

I wasn't sure to let it evaporate first or do a water change, I would say everything is diluted with the extra ro/di water? I would have to keep the level the same in the sump or it could throw off something, I would think?

I would agree with NanaReefer, water change. And that definitely stinks!

I would also do a water change and slowly raise the salinity. Have you checked your parameters?

Nightmare!! Auto top offs are for lazy people anyway, fish tanks should take at least an hour or two of your time everyday.

So sorry to hear, but just be glad the sump didn't overflow

Plus one on the salinity check. Sorry to hear your having troubles.:(

whaaa? lol smh

Shake your head all you want lol !!! It's true and anyone who says that it keeps more consistent parameters and salinity compared to daily top offs is a STRIAGHT up liar. The difference between the two processes in a reef under 300 gallons in minuscule enough that you would never know the difference

Plus I have heard a TON of nightmare auto top off stories, I bet you have never read about a guy who manually overflowed his tank lol.

If you don't have an hour or two a day for ANY pet, you should not own that pet

This. I have ran a simple ATO for eight years. No failures. To say a tank should take a couple hours a day is silly. My 8g takes about thirty minutes a week to clean the glass, do a water change, and top off. What am I supposed to do for two hours a day to it?

Same with my 120g - I'd run out of things to do after fifteen minutes. Whatever you are doing for two hours a day - sounds like you have a lot of someone going on. I'd remove whatever takes that much time from the process and kick back with a beer and enjoy the view.

Wow I spend tops an hour a week on all three of my tanks, and I highly doubt my python would be ok with me spending time in her enclosure. Double goes for the tarantula. Pray tell, what shall my poisonous arachnid and I do for two hours a day? Share war stories? lol.

I'm sure there is a plethora of things you could with your animal. My girlfriend owns several snakes and spends ample amounts of time with them, whether that be taking them outside or cleaning their tanks / feeding them.

I have plenty of time to kick back and enjoy the view with a beer. Even if you were to just take 30 mins. Everyday I take at least 10-15 mins to top off all the tanks, about 15-20 mins spot feeding, and about 30-40 mins every few days to do water changes.

But there is always something to do. Clean powerheads, organize materials, test water, move / test coral placement.

There is two kinds of people out there, people who care about their pets more than themselves, and people who want pets just to keep for their own personal feelings

I don't want to offend anyone, but I can almost promise to show anyone who spend less than 30 mins a day on their system, a much nicer system of that same size, belonging to someone who DOES take the extra time for their tanks

Nice work here Vizzle. I'm going to let you continue ranting. Your credibility declines every post.

Continue on. I'm moving to some threads that haven't been wrecked and show no promise. :lalala:

This post is going the wrong direction. We are here to help with these situations not to give negative feed back. Trebor is frustrated and is only looking for help. We need to band together and help each other out and try to help him resolve his problem.

Lol. That's one person's opinion, and perspective. Calling everyone with an ATO lazy is not going to win you any friends.

If you spend two hours a day doing work on a single tank, especially a tank the size the op is describing then there is something not right about the tank to require that much work. I test my water every three days, and do weekly water carbon gfo changes, test oral placement and everything else and I spend at max 3.5 hours a week...and that is taking my time doing stuff. An autotop off will keep parameters more stable than a daily, weekly, whatever manual topoff. My ATO fires at least fifteen to twenty times a day and i don't have that many times a day to keep my water level that consistent (which keeps the volume fraction of everything more consistent). Even if a slight difference the ATO does keep parameters more consistent unless you are manually topping of every hour or do with a cup of water...that is simple math, so check your arithmetic before you call somebody a liar.

Trebor, I see that you have an Apex. You should be able to program it to run your ATO for a short amount of time and alert you if there is a problem. Have you considered looking into a pressure switch ATO.
