It looks like a Jedi Mind Trick look-alike. So I am going to say it is an undata.

I'm leaning that way too but wanted to give my friend benefit of the doubt. could it possibly be a confusa with same colors?

I feel like almost any color combination on a coral is a possibility. But in this particular case, your coral matches all appearances of the Jedi Mind Trick Montipora Undata IMO. However, the only set in stone identification can be made when the coral reaches mini colony/colony size, so you can use the growth to help you identify the species.

Here are some pictures I found of the Jedi Mind Trick under different lighting by searching through google images. You can use them to draw your own conclusion since you can see your coral in person.

The attached image below is of a monitpora that is identical in coloration to the Jedi Mind Trick but not lineaged to be of the same species.

haha. But who know if the corals in those pics were identified properly. :)

And the truth in this is who really does know, hahah. But based on multiple other accounts of this coral appearance matching that of an undata, collectively it is favored that this coral is of the undata species.

thanks klr for your feedback.

You are welcome.

If you would like to see images of both of these species in the wild occurring as massive colonies, follow these links. As a colony the two species can easily be distinguished from one another. So I guess your best bet would be to confidently identify your montipora once it larger.

Confusa

the upper right pic you posted earlier seems to match the aims confusa

tomato, tomato.

It doesnt really matter. Many corals are mis identified. Infact I also think there are more species that aims doesnt identify. Its close either way.

Funny you say this because I actually, after looking at the database, decided to go check the credibility of the sources of the pictures and the person who owns that colony states that his colonies are not of Tyree lineage. So I will be labeling that image so it does not mislead anyone else.

had a jedi long ago that looked exactly like the first pic which has a very smooth appearance. wanted to know id because this one is much nicer to me growth-wise with purple ridges all along the base. there are so many variations and if mine were to die I could be certain of what im getting. mines may not be either

i have 2 frags of jedi that are totally different looking from different sources

Then one or both are not Jedi. Too many people getting carried away with the names.

Here are some pics of a wild Montipora I bought at a LFS that i grew out and identified closest to undata. It also looks just like Jedi Mind Trick but is stronger and grows faster. When i sell or trade a piece i call it "Aquatouch Montipora cf. undata". Aquatouch tells the beginning lineage, it is for sure a Montipora, cf. stands for confer or "the closest resemblance to this species", then undata because i could not find anything closer. This is how i feel is the right way to identify a coral frag. Placing a false show name on it is a cheap trick in my book.
