I have a PLS - 100 gen 3 Cadlights skimmer. I have a 40 breef for sump for my 90G DT. The skimmer is undersized and the sump has no baffles whatsoever and I have no idea how to do them, so that would be a plus of not having it. So, I was thinking instead of wasting space with baffles and an undersized skimmer, I could just use the whole thing as a 40 gallon refugium. I feel like this would work better anyways. Also, could I just put the skimmer in the refugium? Thoughts? Thanks!

The skimmer will get clogged with macro. Mine are in very separate chambers and I still get clogged with macro on occasion. I’d sell the small skimmer and get a much bigger skimmer. My skimmer on my 90 is rated for a 180-250gal and I’ve had a fair amount of success. I also have a fuge.

That is best case scenario, but I have a very large veterinarian bill to pay and that is not in the budget at the time.

You might be able to jury rig some eggcrate baffles to keep the chaeto away from the skimmer inlet.

Is the sump tank glass or acrylic? Either way putting a baffle in isn't hard just easier with acrylic. And if the tank is acrylic it's eaiser to use acrylic baffles and glass for glass. If it's glass check out local glass companies for offcuts and see if they will cut to size for you. Silicone it in and done easy baffle.

Even if you use the whole sump tank as a refugium you will still need to baffle it as stated before to stop s return pump getting clogged with macro as well.

Honestly I'm a bigger believer in large refugium than over sized skimmer. So I would suggest the undersized skimmer and a larger refugium could definitely control nutrients successfully it's all a wait and see game. It really depends on other factors of how heavily stocked the tank is, how much your feeding it etc.
