understanding dosing, how do you know what you need?

Stumbled across this thread today while looking for some info on dosing. I would highly suggest anyone that is new to the hobby watch the entire 52 Weeks of Reefing Series that BRS did a couple of years back on YouTube. Then watch the entire 5-Minute Saltwater Aquarium Guide Series. Very very good info in both series that cover all of these issues.

It seems to me that before addressing dosing questions (I.e., how much to dos, automatic etc.), a young reefer needs to have a fundamental understanding of the "Big 3" (Alk, Ca, Mg) and how they interplay with the tank. Further, as there was a lot of discussion regarding "baseline" parameters, it is important to note that what "baseline" you are striving for may be based upon the type of tank you are attempting to achieve. Different salts have different purposes and thus different parameters. Thus, saying that the "baseline" is set by the salt is probably not the best guide. An SPS-dominant tank may have a different set of baseline parameters than a mixed-reef. Sure there are general guides (see BRS series and other like RandyFarley's website), but understanding what PH represent and its interaction with Alkalinity, as well as how corals build their skeletons from the Calcium Carbonate in the water are important things to understand in the hobby. While you don't have to become a marine biologist, having a fundamental understanding of those concepts will guide you on some of these questions.
