Anyone take pics in their tank with an underwater camera? If so would you use the same manual settings or just set it to the underwater setting?

Do they come out better or worse than if you took them on a tripod outside of the tank?

Underwater macro setting for me- I have a fujifilm xp20

Here are some of my pics.

Here are some recent underwater shots I took with my Canon D10. For daylight, I just use the normal underwater mode on ISO 80. For actinic, I have a saved custom white balance setting, also ISO 80. I try to prop my hand against the glass or a rock with the flow off, take a deep breath and try to stay real still. With a little practice, most of the shots are good the first time. Not the same quality as a DSLR, but you can get different angles, and don't shoot through the glass with an underwater camera.

barbianj those are really clear and detailed! did you use a macro setting as well or no?

Thank you both for the response. I think I will have to try out my underwater feature for sure now.

So the biggest tip is just low ISO and a steady hand?

Yes, macro setting and a steady hand. Easy touch on the shutter button. Kind of like shooting a gun.

Also, you can shoot through a Portal viewer for really good macro shots. (from outside the tank)

I love the porthole and a dslr!!!!!!!! I have a D20 canon but i can't seem to get the hand or the right settings for it yet.

Anyone use the life proof case to take pictures in the tank? I am debating doing this once i get a new phone. I mean underwater pics

I took everyone's advice, and tried my hand at some underwater photography. I got some decent clear pics with all of my lights on. I still had little luck getting a clear pic with just actinics.
I did get one pic I was actually really proud of! pardon me if I am a little giddy over it. I've never taken a nice pic of my corals in my life. I only took 5 pics of this pink and I got this one great one! Pump off, full light, ISO 80-100, underwater setting with macro.

^^Nice!

The first two pictures I posted were under full blue LED's. I had to set a custom white balance for it to come out right. I tried using a gray to set it, but the colors never came out quit right, too much red. By chance, I sampled the red in my War and Peace coral, and the pictures come out very close to what I see by eye.

O_o I have to figure out how to set a custom white balance now? haha you really want me to throw my camera out of the window dont you?

Heheee. Baby steps. Once you figure it out, it's really easy. Look at the improvement already.
