I recently had a velvet outbreak. I tried the management vs eradication and H2O2 dosing and was loosing fish right and left so I decided to pull all the fish out of my 250 gallon mixed reef.

It was a pain in the butt. Every piece of rock that I had in there had to come out to catch the fire fish. I had to dig through the sand bed to find the melunaris and yellow coris wrasses. My water was dis- gust- ing. It was green from stirring up the sand bed and I couldn’t see the overflow in the back of the tank when looking through the front.

I figured my nutrients would be through the roof.

I gave it a several hours to let everything settle and started putting rock Back in. 24 hours later I tested my water and nitrate was half of what it was and phosphate was 0.04. Last test prior was 28 and 0.15!

How is this possible. There is still visible detritus in the tank and All over my sump and equipment. Project for this weekend is to clean the sump.

Never would have expected those numbers! I had to stop the gFO and cut way back on my cheato reactor light schedule

A bit off topic, but my understanding the "management" does not work with velvet?

It only works with ich, right?

Velvet kills way too fast for it to be manageable

Faulty test result?
Used hanna. so far 48 hours out and polyps are extended and overall things look ok. I'll test again tomorrow.

When things first stated it looked more like ich. I treated with focus/ metro and upped feeding to make sure nutrition was on point. As soon as I saw what looked more like velvet I started H2O2 and UV. Maybe if I had started H2O2 and UV immediately (or even prophylactically when new fish were added it might have made a difference.

UV and H2O2 would not have helped against velvet, so at least you know you did you best in the end

If you catch it early and the fish are healthy enough before contracting the velvet it's certainly helped in my experience
