Unhappy Zoa! Help!

I have a 55l zoa dominated tank, friday I added a phosphate/nitrate remover sponge to the rear sump as the PO4 was 1ppm and NO3 5ppm, within hours every single zoa is closed up tight and not opened back up again.

What should I do? Is it a reaction to the phosphate/nitrate being ripped out to fast it's now absolutely undetectable? We are talking £100s of worth of zoa shut up tight and looking almost dehydrated!

There is a mushroom, few Xenia and gsp looking wonderful and my frogfish is happy as can be, but the zoa are really unhappy!

Yes, Ive had candy canes do the same thing with GFO.

5ppm of n03 is good and 1ppm of n04 is a bit high but can be inaccurate. Also a simple water change would of taken care of that. Also pylop coral can thrive still with a lot higher nitrates.

I would remove the sponge and do a small water change and down change anything. Should spring back with in days

Best thing is patience which I something lack of. Have some rastas that gotten pox in my tank and I popped the zit looking tissue and dipped in peroxide and they opening up slowly

The candy canes survived. Literally EVERY time I added GFO (like one tablespoon in a hob for a 30g) would shrink up to the bone. Ive quite literally been killing them for two years. Thus my GFO is 5 years old.
And the candy canes have just split again.
